    Under the general supervision of the Executive Director of Academic Advising & Accessibility Services, and working closely with the SUNY RECONNECT Program Specialist, the P/T Adjunct Academic Counselor will engage adult students participating in the SUNY RECONNECT initiative. The counselor will be responsible for effective enrollment and case management interventions as well as provide service to the college in support of SUNY Reconnect. SUNY Reconnect is a SUNY-wide initiative that helps adult students enroll in and complete associate degrees in select degree plans within 10 semesters or less at SUNY community colleges. This program is designed to increase the number of adult students who enroll in and complete degrees at SUNY Westchester Community College in approved degree plans. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

     

    + Engage and build connections with SUNY Reconnect students in choosing a career and degree program, that can lead to successful completion, by supporting students with their educational and life skills planning (e.g. goal development) and providing individualized academic counseling to students for their first 30 credits.

    + Engage SUNY Reconnect students in a review of their eligibility for financial aid, credit for prior learning, transfer credits and connect students to those resources.

    + Engage students in establishing successful behaviors and monitor their progress by connecting students to different on and off campus resources, assist with the coordination and implementation of retention strategies, and provide intervention for students.

    + Provide service to the college by assisting with SUNY RECONNECT project success and reporting, campus reports, attending meetings, serving occasional evening/weekend hours, and participating in student orientation programs and workshops.

    Job Requirements:

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate must possess one of the following:

    + Master's Degree and Bachelor's Degree in Guidance Counseling, Psychology, Sociology, or closely related field, and one year of professional experience.

    + Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field as listed above, and three years of experience.

    + Master's Degree in a relevant field as listed above, plus a Bachelor's degree in a non-specific field (other than those listed), and two years of experience.

     

    The successful candidate will have experience with advising, a thorough understanding of exemplary approaches to support adult community college students, and a background in working with financial aid. The successful candidate must possess a high attention to detail; excellent written and oral communications skills; and an ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously while remaining organized. They must also have a proactive nature; exceptional judgement; and a collegial and team-oriented temperament. Proficiency in software systems including Microsoft Office applications is required. The ability to exercise discretion in handling confidential information; an ability to be flexible and adaptive to changing needs and priorities; a strong student-centered orientation; and an ability to work with a team of diverse faculty, staff, and students are essential. All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice in all college policies, practices, and personnel.

     

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bilingual verbal and written fluency strongly preferred. Experience using platforms such as PeopleSoft, Degree Works, and Starfish is desirable. Experience with student support services, financial aid, and adult learners, and/or student advising experience; demonstrated intercultural competence and a continuing commitment to advance equity, inclusion, and social justice practices in support of the needs of marginalized and minoritized student populations.

    Additional Information:

    POSITION EFFECTIVE: The position will remain open until filled. This is a part time position that is grant funded, and the continuation of the position will be dependent upon the continuance of grant funds.

     

    WORK SCHEDULE: Work hours will vary, up to 28 hours per week. Evening and weekend hours will be required.

     

    HOURLY RATE OF PAY: $51.50 per hour. No benefits.
