What you'll do
The Laboratory Billing Coordinator I is responsible for all billing related functions for the Laboratory Network by assuring accurate charge information is in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) for all Bassett Healthcare Laboratory sites. This includes all laboratory charge submission processes, including maintaining the manual charge submission procedure manual, associated functions in the Laboratory Information System (LIS), primary contact for charge inquires, and coordinating registration functions for the department to ensure timely and accurate posting of changes.
+ Coordinates and oversees all billing related functions for the Laboratory Network by assuring accurate charge information is in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) for all Bassett Healthcare Laboratory sites
+ Reviews and assures accurate charge information is contained within the LIS by regularly reviewing the current LIS fee schedule on a quarterly basis, reporting back to the appropriate supervisor any discrepancies with no more than 3 previously unidentified changes since the last review as measured by direct supervisory observation
+ Reviews and assures accurate charge submission passes to Finance daily for all designated sites by following established Laboratory Policies and Procedures alerting Information Services and the Laboratory Support Services Supervisor or LIS Coordinator immediately if problems are identified as measured by direct observation of co-workers or supervisor
+ Reviews and assures appropriate credit information is forwarded to finance for designated laboratory sites daily by following established Laboratory Policies and Procedures as measured by direct observation by supervisor and/or feedback from Finance
+ Follows up on requests from Finance regarding patients charges within 7 days of receipt of the request 90% – 95% of the time as indicated during quarterly review as observed by supervisor
+ Reviews claims action reports, missing diagnosis, and other reports generated from Finance and assures appropriate action is taken within 7 – 10 working days to be reviewed quarterly as observed by supervisor
+ Provides assistance to other laboratory, hospital and network staff by providing information and answering billing related questions within 24 hours of request 95% - 98% of the time as measured by customer feedback and direct observation of co-workers and supervisor
+ Coordinates annual ordering of billing and coding supplies by gathering information from departmental staff about references that are needed for the upcoming years ICD-9, HCPCS and CPT code books and preparing purchase requests reflecting those needs as measured by supervisory observation
+ Utilizes time efficiently and prioritizes work appropriately as indicated by staff feedback and/or supervisor observation
+ Handles difficult situations professionally. Usually remains calm under stressful situations and able to implement solutions to issues that occur as observed by supervisor
+ Sets an example in work performance and team building, concern for patients and co-workers by maintaining a positive interpersonal approach and demeanor, as observed by the manager
+ Coordinates requests for special pricing, customer inquiries regarding prices and credit requests from providers. Submits appropriate paperwork to the Laboratory Support Services Manager for approval
+ Receives requests for special pricing and submits promptly to the Laboratory Support Services Manager or designee within 24 hours of request 95% - 98% of the time as observed by supervisor
+ Provides current price information to any laboratory customers when requested and retains documentation as per department policy assuring that follow up occurs within 24 hours of the request as measured by quarterly review of pricing documentation forms by supervisor
+ Receives requests for credits and processes within 24 hours, alerting the Laboratory Support Services Manager or designee of specific issues including, but not limited to total amounts of >$300.00, repetitive requests, and questionable reason for credit as measured by supervisory observation and random supervisory review of credit request files
+ Reviews reports and invoices for lab tests referred to outside facilities. Assures reports are complete and invoices accurately reflect testing ordered and contract pricing. Initiates corrective action as appropriate
+ Reviews reference lab reports to assure testing was complete, issuing credit for any testing not performed and generating charges for any reflexive testing that was performed 95% to 99% of the time as measured by quarterly random review of invoices and patient accounts by supervisor
+ Reviews invoices to verify that the tests billed were ordered/accessioned and the charges are correct 95% to 99% of the time as measured by random review of invoices by supervisor
+ Resolves pricing discrepancies with reference laboratory staff by contacting the representative of that laboratory, describing the discrepancy and requesting adjustment as appropriate within 7 working days of receipt of the invoice 95% - 99% of the time as measured by supervisory review
+ Communicates regularly with Finance, Registration, other Bassett Laboratories, and appropriate staff to assure appropriate billing for testing services performed by the Laboratory
+ Prepares interdepartmental and agency bills and passes to Finance no later than the 5th of each month 90% to 95% of the time as measured by staff feedback and/or supervisory observation
+ Acts as the laboratory contact for registration functions, coordinates registration functions for staff in the laboratory, completes outpatient registrations accurately and efficiently 95% - 99% of the time as indicated by the quality review performed by Department of Business Operations and reported to supervisor
+ Keeps current with Medicare regulations related to Laboratory Services. Follows established policies and procedures on laboratory compliance and current Medicare regulations
+ Notifies the Laboratory Support Services Manager within 24 hours of identifying any variation from established procedure or questionable charge submission practices as measured by direct supervisory observation
+ Attains minimum required continuing education hours as indicated by Hospital Compliance 99% of the time as noted on annual review of documentation of Compliance checklist by supervisor
+ Follows established policies and procedures on laboratory compliance including the Correct Coding Initiative, charge submission protocols, and current Medicare regulations as observed by supervisor
+ Maintains charge submission procedures by making suggestions as necessary to meet regulatory changes as measured by direct supervisory observation
+ Utilizing Coding and reimbursement knowledge, transcribes the written diagnosis and enters the appropriate code into the HPA billing system
+ Attains and documents at least 10 units of continuing education annually as defined by departmental policy
+ Keeps the supervisor/charge person informed and communicates effectively to ensure vital patient and operational information is shared among co-workers and shifts appropriately as indicated by departmental feedback and/or observed by supervisor
+ Understands the existing and potential hazard in the work area in such a way as to prevent injury/illness by following hospital and laboratory health and safety policies and procedures 100% of the time as indicated by departmental feedback and/or observed by supervisor
+ Corrects and/or reports any safety hazard or malfunctioning of equipment to supervisor/charge person within their work shift as indicated by departmental feedback and/or observed by supervisor
+ Follows hospital and departmental policies and procedures related to compliance to assure current Medicare regulations are upheld as indicated by departmental feedback and/or observed by supervisor
+ Performs other duties as requested and observed by supervisor or manager
What we need from you
Education:
+ 2 Year/Associate Degree, required
+ Associate Degree from a medical laboratory technician or business program, preferred
+ Experience may be considered in lieu of education
Experience:
+ Minimum3 years of related healthcare experience, required

Physical Requirements:
+ Sedentary Work - Exerting up to 10 lbs of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Pay Range
Salary is based on a variety of factors, including, but not limited to, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, training, and fair market evaluation based on industry standards. The above compensation range represents a good faith belief of the compensation range by Bassett Healthcare Network, and its entities and affiliates, at the time of this posting or advertisement.
Pay Range Minimum:
USD $18.02/Hr.
Pay Range Maximum:
USD $27.03/Hr.
