The Senior Associate Athletic Director/CFO oversees the comprehensive financial operations of the Intercollegiate Athletics (ICA) department, ensuring alignment with university-wide fiscal policies and strategic objectives. This leadership role is responsible for managing the annual departmental budget process, developing long-range financial plans, overseeing audit compliance, and supervising key personnel in the Business and Travel Offices. With a strong focus on financial stewardship, compliance, and strategic planning, this role serves as a vital liaison between ICA and central university offices, playing a key role in supporting the department’s financial health, operational efficiency, and long-term sustainability, ensuring that goals, objectives and policies are in strict adherence to NCAA, Conference, ICA and University of Washington rules and regulations.
The CFO reports to the Deputy Director of Athletics/Chief Operating Officer.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Management & Athletic Department Budget:
+ Evaluate, monitor, and improve department’s accounting practices, policies and procedures to ensure compliance and alignment with University guidelines and requirements.
+ Coordinate the development of ICA annual budget guidelines in alignment with University guidelines and requirements.
+ Leveraging University systems, compile and review budget submissions from units across the department; collaborate with leadership to finalize the annual budget.
+ Prepare financial reports and budget documentation for internal leadership and university financial partners.
+ Conduct detailed monitoring of departmental budget activity and engage with unit budget managers to support compliance and recommend corrective action for unfavorable variances.
+ Utilize University financial tracking tools and dashboards to assist with forecasting, scenario planning, and executive decision-making.
+ Track and manage recurring financial commitments such as legal fees and campus service agreements.
Long Range Financial Planning:
+ Lead and own development of long-term financial models to support the department’s strategic priorities
+ Project and monitor multi-year operating revenue and expense trends, capital expenditures, and fund balances.
+ Prepare cash flow projections and assist in planning for reserve and liquidity needs in collaboration with central university offices.
+ Support analysis related to debt service planning and coordinate with the University Treasury Office as needed.
State, City, Internal and Financial Audits:
+ Coordinate all audits including any audit responses.
+ Write management discussion and analysis for annual financial audit report.
+ Lead the department’s preparation and documentation for the NCAA Agreed-Upon Procedures (AUP) review.
Personnel Functions:
+ Supervise Business Office and Travel Office staff, ensuring effective operations and professional development.
+ Provide day-to-day guidance and direction on departmental financial policy, procedures, and compliance in alignment with University guidelines.
Other Financial and Management Responsibilities:
+ Support risk management efforts, including insurance coverage and claims coordination.
+ Prepare and submit required financial and equity reporting, including the EADA report, NCAA, and conference filings.
+ Assist in the development and review of RFPs, vendor contracts, and financial terms.
+ Track revenue-generating contracts for performance incentives and ensure accurate invoicing and collections.
+ Ensure compliance with state ethics requirements in financial transactions and reporting.
+ Serve as a key liaison to central university offices including the University Controller’s Office, Treasury, Budget, and Tax.
+ May direct and supervise other ICA units/personnel as assigned by Director of Athletics.
Outreach:
+ Responsible for periodic reports and presentations to campus constituents, including the Board of Regents, the Office of the President, the Advisory Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics, Treasury Office, Tyee Executive Committee and Tyee Board, and others as needed.
Compliance
Compliance with the rules and regulations of the University, the NCAA, the Conference, the State of Washington and any other governing body is of paramount importance to the University. The overall responsibility of this position is for the successful operation of the program in full compliance with all such rules and regulations. As a condition of employment, the Employee shall be required to participate in rules education programs offered by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
**Required Skills and Experience** :
Bachelor’s degree and six to eight years of financial management and supervisory experience required to include three to five years of senior level staff or management experience required.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.
Additional Requirements:
Outstanding oral and written communication skills needed; must be able to communicate complex financial concepts clearly. Leader in creating and supporting a diverse and inclusive work environment. Ability and commitment to work effectively with diverse populations of staff, coaches, and students needed. Ability to work some nights and weekends and travel as needed.
Desired Skills and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and CPA, advanced degree in business, accounting or finance desirable. Experience with Workday Financial system. Experience working in the sports industry (collegiate or professional) and/or higher education preferred.
Compensation, Benefits and Position Details
Pay Range Minimum:
$180,000.00 annual
Pay Range Maximum:
$219,996.00 annual
Other Compensation:
- Taxable benefits include tickets to UW Intercollegiate home competitions. - Non-local candidates may be eligible for a moving allowance.
