Job Summary
The University of Utah is building the future of innovation — and we’re seeking a Venture Development Partner for a limited-term, part-time role (6 months, 16 hours/week). This position is designed to mentor faculty founders and early-stage teams in specific industries as they translate research into impactful ventures. The Venture Development Partner will provide targeted guidance on commercialization strategy and fundraising readiness, helping teams refine their business approach, craft compelling pitches, and prepare for investor engagement.
Responsibilities
+ Provide one-on-one and group mentorship to faculty founders and early-stage teams.
+ Guide teams in refining commercialization strategies and business models.
+ Share expertise in startup strategy, market positioning, and early growth planning.
+ Advise teams on crafting investor materials and preparing compelling pitches.
+ Coach founders on engaging with investors and navigating due diligence.
+ Help teams understand and access early funding pathways (grants, seed capital, angel investment, venture funding).
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); two years full-time experience; demonstrated communication and human relations skills; and a commitment to provide excellent customer service required. A Master’s degree preferred.
Preferences
+ Background in entrepreneurship, venture capital, startup operations, or technology commercialization.
+ Expertise in specific technical areas or passion for advancing innovation and helping researchers translate discoveries into impact.
