    How to Apply

A cover letter is required for consideration for this position and should be attached as the first page of your resume. The cover letter should address your specific interest in the position and outline skills and experience that directly relate to this position.

    Job Summary

The Department of Cardiac Surgery at Michigan Medicine is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow/Scientist to join the Thoracic Aorta Research Lab and conduct experiments at the North Campus Research Complex (NCRC). Aortic disorders are major causes of morbidity and mortality in the United States. The research in our laboratory is focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying aortic aneurysm and valve disease. Utilizing a variety of approaches including stem cell biology, gene editing, bioengineered human vascular grafts and animal model studies, we aim to gain mechanistic insights into the disease pathologies and ultimately develop treatment strategies.

    Mission Statement

Michigan Medicine improves the health of patients, populations and communities through excellence in education, patient care, community service, research and technology development, and through leadership activities in Michigan, nationally and internationally. Our mission is guided by our Strategic Principles and has three critical components; patient care, education and research that together enhance our contribution to society.

    Responsibilities*

The Thoracic Aorta Research Lab brings together surgeons and researchers to develop novel approaches that address clinical needs in human aortic research and surgical intervention. Their work aims to improve the surgical outcomes of various procedures targeting thoracic aortic aneurysm and dissection. In translational research, the team combines human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSC), gene editing, tissue engineered blood vessels, and functional genomics to reveal the molecular mechanisms underlying aortic aneurysm and dissection.

The selected candidate will be expected to design experiments in an independent fashion, analyze data, develop new research methodologies, prepare research papers, and contribute to grant applications. While funding is currently available for the position, the candidate will be encouraged to apply for additional funding after one year.

    Required Qualifications*

An MD or PhD degree is required for this position. We are seeking exceptional candidates with strong backgrounds in vascular medicine, stem cell biology, and gene editing technologies. Additional proficiency in vascular biology or genomics data analysis is a plus, but not required.
