    General Summary:

    We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist to join our CSAT Analytics team, focused on uncovering insights that drive exceptional customer experiences. This role blends advanced technical skills with a deep understanding of the customer journey. You’ll lead efforts to analyze structured and unstructured data - including customer survey responses, operational metrics, and touchpoint interactions - using tools like Python, SQL, and large language models (LLMs). You will work with a variety of business areas to improve CSAT outcomes and elevate the voice of the customer across the organization.

     

    This position is available in the following campus locations: Portland, ME or Chattanooga TN.

    Job Specifications

    + Bachelor’s degree in quantitative field is required, Master’s or PhD in a quantitative field is preferred

    + 6 years of professional experience or equivalent relevant work experience preferred

    + **Advanced Python skills** , with proficiency in packages such as **Panda**

    + **Core Data Science Capabilities:** Deep expertise in at least two of the following skillsets preferred; and basic capabilities in the other:

    + Programming & Process automation: Experience with file I/O, database integrations, and APIs to build automated analytics pipelines. Process research and design, demonstrated through use of DevOps, automation, data mining, web scraping, or object-oriented software is preferred. Experience engineering solutions using cloud platforms and exposure to scaling solutions in the cloud. Understands partnership with IT to deploy solutions.

    + Experience using internal and external APIs. Experience with object-oriented development and database integrations (cloud and local). Experience partnering with engineering teams to bring processes to scale. Exposure to cloud platforms.

    + Data Visualization: Expertise on multiple data visualization tools. Expertise in static and dynamic data visualization. Basic understanding of visualizations suitable for specific scenarios.

    + Statistics & Statistical Modeling: Expertise using statistical inference and regression. Expertise in machine learning, feature selection, and feature extraction. Leads multiple end-to-end machine learning and analysis projects.

    + **Data Extraction, Transformation, and Loading** Prefer: Expertise in writing complex SQL queries that join multiple tables/databases. Independently explores databases/tables to identify best data sources to solve business problems. Demonstrates ability to troubleshoot complex SQL queries with little guidance. Demonstrates ability to create logical data models by combining data from multiple sources including internal, and external data. Demonstrates ability to lead external data partnerships and represent Unum’s interests in discussions with external data constituents.

    + **Core business capabilities** include strong communication skills and strong experience in financial services. Strong project management skills. Effectively and independently prioritizes and manages own projects simultaneously and provides direction on projects and prioritization to less experienced staff. Strong experience leading engagements and working with executive leadership.

    + **Leadership Capabilities** : Actively coaches and mentors peers and team members, especially within areas of expertise. Responds quickly and positively to change and is viewed as a promoter of change management. Provides technical leadership and direction for data science initiatives, ensuring output conforms to agreed upon quality attributes

    + **Preferred characteristics:** Entrepreneurial self-starter. A thorough, results-oriented problem-solver, and a lifelong learner with voracious curiosity. Demonstrated expertise in their organization. Ability to conduct independent research and development for use internally and externally

    Principal Duties and Responsibilities

    • Leverage business expertise to design and execute analytical solutions using optimization, simulation, data mining and other statistical methods with a focus on delivering actionable business value that contributes to the decision-making process.

    • Integrate large volume of data from different sources (including DB2, SQL Server, Web API and Teradata) to create data assets for ad-hoc analyses and larger studies.

    • Apply validation, aggregation and reconciliation techniques to create rich modeling-ready data framework.

    • Uses broad range of techniques to construct predictive models to explain and understand observed events, forecast expected behavior, or identify risk through scoring or clustering. Appropriately applies domain expertise to modeling process.

    • Efficiently interpret results and communicate findings and potential value to influence manager leaders and business partners decisions.

    • Play a lead role in integrating solutions within existing business processes using automation techniques.

    • Understand theory and application of current and emerging statistical methods and tools.

    • Coaches, mentors and develops lower level Data Scientists.

    • Perform other related duties as assigned.

    The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.

     

    $89,400.00-$183,500.00

     

    Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
