    Job Title: Diesel Mechanic – School District Transportation Department

     

    Position Summary:The Diesel Mechanic plays a vital role in the safe and efficient operation of the school district's transportation fleet. This position is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and inspection of school buses and district vehicles, ensuring they meet all local, state, and federal safety standards. The mechanic will also be expected to drive student routes as needed and communicate effectively with bus drivers and the Transportation Director to support daily transportation operations.

    Employment Status:Part-Time, 12-Month Position

     

    Pay:Starting at $26.31

    Primary Responsibilities:

    + Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on diesel and gasoline-powered school buses and district vehicles, including engines, brakes, electrical systems, steering, and suspension.

    + Prepare vehicles for and be present during all state-required inspections; ensure all buses are compliant with safety and mechanical standards.

    + Maintain detailed service records for each vehicle in the fleet.

    + Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical issues using appropriate tools and technology.

    + Respond to emergency breakdowns and provide roadside assistance when necessary.

    + Operate school buses on assigned routes or for field trips, athletic events, or emergency coverage as needed.

    + Conduct pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections when operating a route.

    + Work collaboratively with bus drivers to identify mechanical issues and schedule repairs.

    + Communicate consistently with the Transportation Director to report on vehicle readiness, upcoming maintenance, inspection timelines, and parts or supply needs.

    + Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in the maintenance shop.

    + Keep current with industry best practices, safety regulations, and vehicle technology through training and certifications.

    Qualifications:

    + High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training or certification in diesel mechanics preferred.

    + Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with school bus and passenger endorsements preferred, or willingness to obtain within a specified time frame.

    + Minimum of 2 years of experience in diesel vehicle repair, preferably with school bus fleets.

    + Working knowledge of vehicle diagnostic systems and mechanical tools.

    + Ability to interpret technical manuals, diagrams, and service bulletins.

    + Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.

    + Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

    + Must pass background check and drug screening per district and state regulations.

    Working Conditions:

    + Indoor and outdoor work in various weather conditions.

    + Physical demands include lifting up to 50 lbs., standing, bending, and working in tight spaces.

    + On-call availability may be required for emergency repairs or driving coverage.

     

    Compensation:Commensurate with experience and in accordance with the district’s classified staff salary schedule.
