Job Summary
Responsible for assisting the Laboratory technologists in the documentation and management of all processing events and other related activities. Collect, process, pack and ship biological samples needed for client requested biospecimens or pre-screening of animals for future shipments. Assist with supply preparation and sample collection procedures to ensure an efficient process and timely delivery of shipments to meet customer requests. Also responsible for preventive health care, environmental enrichment and handling and restraint of laboratory animals. May serve as mentor on specific skills to less experienced staff.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
+ Perform technical duties associated with processing events such as administration of various therapeutic agents using different modes of administration (ID, IM, SQ, PO... ), venipuncture techniques and other tasks as appropriate.
+ Routinely handle, and restrain Non-Human Primates as required to collect biological samples.
+ Perform and be proficient in basic veterinary technical skills (i.e., collection of biological samples, TB tests, veterinary observations, clinical record initiation, etc.).
+ Collect samples for references labs as well as in house lab. This includes, but is not limited to blood collection, rectal swabs, and blood smears.
+ Maintain accurate departmental and specified customer record keeping.
+ May generate paperwork to support colony health management.
+ Observe animals and report illnesses or behavioral abnormalities when performing technical procedures.
+ Prepare sample collection tubes as needed according to schedule, and receive, arrange, process and track test samples.
+ Pre-draw medications as required according to schedule.
+ May assist in the training of new personnel.
+ Efficient time management to ensure all tasks are completed within the day.
+ Perform packing/shipping of samples and/or animals to customers, as needed.
+ Understand and comply with all SOPs pertaining to specific area.
+ Adhere to and be familiar with the Department of Transportation (DOT), International Air Transport Association (IATA), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Center for Disease Control (CDC) regulations and standards associated with the receipt, transfer, distribution, processing and packing of biological samples and/or animals.
+ Assist with lab supply inventory management including stocking of supplies using first in first out process.
+ Daily cleaning and maintenance of laboratory, equipment, and related areas.
+ Perform all other related duties as assigned.
The pay range for this position is $23.00-$26.00/hour.
Job Qualifications
+ Education: High school diploma or General Education Degree (G.E.D.).
+ Experience: Minimum of 1-year related experience in a laboratory animal facility and AALAS Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
+ Certification/Licensure: AALAS ALAT certification is preferred.
+ Other: Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English. Knowledge of standard and proprietary database systems preferred. Proficiency utilizing desktop applications (word processing, spreadsheets, databases) required. Must have demonstrated technical expertise with a variety of animal species with a focus on USDA covered species to include rabbits, nonhuman primates, dogs, pigs, and small ruminants. Experience working in a regulatory controlled environment, adhering to SOP's. Excellent organizational skills, especially with time management and record keeping. Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills. Demonstrate the knowledge and ability to perform technical procedures to support the steps needed to adhere to animal holding and biospecimen protocols.
