About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Clinical Documentation Specialist (CDS) to support automation initiatives within our business office. This is a contract position with an initial term of 6–9 months, with the possibility of extension based on project needs.

The CDS will play a critical role in ensuring accurate and complete clinical documentation to support severity of illness (SOI), risk of mortality (ROM), and appropriate reimbursement. This position requires strong clinical knowledge, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively with physicians and clinical teams.

**CANDIDATES MUST RESIDE IN WI OR IA TO BE CONSIDERED**Key Responsibilities

+ Perform concurrent reviews of inpatient medical records to ensure documentation accurately reflects patient acuity and resource utilization.

+ Ensure working DRG assignments are supported by clinical documentation, including identification of CC/MCCs.

+ Use compliant query practices to clarify documentation with providers and follow through to resolution.

+ Maintain integrity and compliance of all documentation and query processes.

+ Utilize CDI software and workflows effectively (e.g., worksheets, query tracking, DRG reconciliation).

+ Meet departmental productivity and quality assurance standards.

+ Collaborate with coding teams, clinical auditors, and CDI leadership to improve documentation quality and compliance.

+ Participate in cross-functional initiatives and maintain awareness of organizational updates and policies.

Qualifications

+ Registered Nurse (RN) certification required

+ Minimum 5 years of full-time adult acute care RN experience in med/surg, critical care, emergency, or utilization review

+ Strong understanding of ICD-CM/PCS coding guidelines

+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills

+ Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Qualifications

+ Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or higher

+ Previous experience in Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI)

+ Experience with chart review or auditing

+ Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS) credential

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $44.00/hr.
