Scope of Job
The Division Chief has the primary role of providing visionary leadership and strategic direction for the Division of Population Health ( DPH ), a research and academic component within the Primary and Community Care ( PCC ) Integrated Service Unit ( ISU ). A major focus for this position is to spearhead the Division’s research enterprise by serving as a principal investigator, successfully garnering extramural funding, and mentoring research faculty. The Division Chief will serve as the major driver in advancing scientific knowledge in population health through innovative and multidisciplinary approaches in data analytics and integration of biostatistical and epidemiological methods that facilitate community-based research. This position’s fundamental role in promoting academic excellence in population health will entail participation in the medical school’s didactic programs through active teaching and curriculum development. Given the integral role of community engagement in advancing the School of Medicine’s mission, the Division Chief will position the DPH to serve as an incubator for innovation in community-based education, research, and population-centered care focused on improving health outcomes.
Duties:
• Provide visionary leadership and strategic direction for the Division to include setting the standard of excellence in population health research.
• Pursue and secure extramural funding as an independent principal investigator
• Guide and mentor faculty in their research and academic interest, and in their pursuit of extramural funding.
• Establish a culture of teamwork that facilitates collaboration within the Division and with faculty in the PCC - ISU and throughout the medical school.
• Establish a strong foundation of scientific inquiry that incorporates cutting-edge methods in biostatistics, epidemiology and data analytics.
• Participate in the academic programs of the medical school, to include teaching and curriculum development in population health and related disciplines
• Recruit and evaluate faculty, to include working collaboratively to identify professional development goals and providing support and guidance in preparation for promotion and tenure
• Actively seek approaches to leverage external sources of funding, including state, federal, and philanthropic entities
• Support and advance the School of Medicine’s mission through the Division’s community engagement activities and Community Partnership Program.
• Participate in the implementation of the School of Medicine’s Strategic Plan, particularly regarding components pertaining to population health and community engagement
• Participate in the administrative functions of the Division as required, including budgetary planning
• Represent the Division at the Department level within the PCC - ISU .

Minimum Qualifications
Educational and academic credentials and a minimum of five years of professional experience to qualify for faculty appointment. A solid and notable record of scholarly work and recognition in population health or related discipline. Teaching experience at a professional school level.

Teaching experience obtained in a medical school. Exceptional leadership and organizational skills to include planning, multidisciplinary collaboration, effective communication, teamwork, and mentoring faculty. Strong track record as an independent principal investigator to include sustained success in securing extramural funding.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
•51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas ( TRS ), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program ( ORP ) instead of TRS , subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.
