    Computational Biologist

    Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

    Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Five (5) years of full-time relevant experience. Research experience in ecology, evolutionary biology, or a related field. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and R. Experience with high-performance computing. Experience navigating Unix environments **.**

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in computational biology, bioinformatics, or a related field. Experience with Brightspace or other learning management systems. Experience managing shared computational infrastructure (e.g., shared servers and backup systems). Experience in writing grant proposals in ecology, evolutionary biology, or a related field.

    Brief Description of Duties:

    Stony Brook University’s Department of Ecology & Evolution is seeking a highly skilled computational biologist and/or bioinformatician for the position of University Instructional Specialist. The bioinformatics core role involves supporting research projects in computational biology and bioinformatics, and contributing to both scientific papers and grant proposals. This position is also responsible for maintaining and enhancing the department’s IT infrastructure, facilitating the use of computer resources in both teaching and research, and providing technical support to faculty, staff, and students. The incumbent will facilitate access to and the efficient use of computers and software for research, instruction, and administration within the department; provide technical computational biology research support and training; continue professional development through self-study and attending relevant conferences or workshops; serve on committees related to computing and technology within the College of Arts and Sciences; supervise assistants assigned to the department's computing unit; and oversee the use of computing facilities by faculty, staff, and students in the department. The successful incumbent must possess strong organizational and communication skills.

    Duties of a University Instructional Specialist may include but are not limited to;

    + Proactively seek research collaborations with faculty and students and contribute to grant proposals and scientific papers.

    + Assist with identifying funding sources and submitting grant proposals for computational biology and bioinformatics research, including contributing to at least one federal grant submission annually.

    + Supervise the use and maintenance of physical computing infrastructure in the department, including arranging the repair or discard of computers and peripherals, performing software installation and regular updates, solving network issues in collaboration with DoIT, and maintaining the Biological Sciences Computing Facility (BSCF) servers, ensuring regular updates, backups, and performance improvements.

    + Offer support in research that requires coding or computational work, including troubleshooting and code optimization.

    + Provide training and instruction to faculty, staff, and students in efficient use of computer resources including university HPC resources, best practices for open science, and best practices for coding (e.g., Software Carpentries workshops)

    + Develop and deliver workshops and short courses on computational techniques, bioinformatics, and high-performance computing (HPC).

    + Maintain the department’s web presence, including ensuring web services provided by the department remain accessible with minimal delays and regularly updating the department's website in adherence with university design standards and in consultation with department leadership and faculty to ensure it reflects current events and advancements.

    + Oversee the operation of Life Sciences computer classrooms and undergraduate biology teaching laboratories. This includes ensuring all classroom and lab equipment, including computers and projection systems, are operational, supporting faculty and teaching assistants in developing online course materials and assessments in collaboration with DoIT, and facilitating online aspects of courses, especially for high-enrollment courses like BIO 201.

    + Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and department mission.

    Special Notes:

    This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

     

    In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $4,000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
