    Description of Work Unit

    The Career Center is part of the Division of Student Affairs with strong and broad-reaching relationships and responsibilities throughout campus, including the academic colleges. Divided into three units (Career Education; Employer Relations; and Operations), the Career Center not only provides career-related-advising and -services to students, it fills many additional functions critical to the success of the university and students, including, but not limited to, campus-wide career fair coordination and job/internship postings, employer relations, institutional career outcome reporting, and student employee development leadership. The Career Center is responsible to a variety of internal and external stakeholders and leverages those relationships to help students investigate the many available professional opportunities with special consideration for finding paths that meet their skills, goals, values, and unique backgrounds.

     

    Warner College of Natural Resources ( WCNR ) is comprised of five academic departments, with a focus on earth systems and the sustainable use, management, and stewardship of natural resources and the environment. The college is deeply committed to fulfilling the University’s land grant promise of access, and through that effort, playing a significant role in diversifying the fields of natural resources. Enrolling approximately 2,400 total students and in existence for more than a century, WCNR has fostered a tight-knit, passionate sense of community among its dedicated students, faculty, and staff; that spirit of community is integral to the College’s culture and success.

    Position Summary

    The Career Education Coordinator ( CEC ) for Warner College of Natural Resources is a half-time, year-round position shared by the Career Center and WCNR that supports the Career Education Manager in delivering career education initiatives to students. This position will serve students through in-person and virtual formats. The CEC will advise students in one-on-one advising appointments and drop-in services, develop and present career education topics to undergraduate and graduate classes, and develop and execute specialized career education initiatives for WCNR students.

     

    This half-time position is 20 hours per week and includes prorated, half-time benefits. This is a permanent, 12-month role. Hours may vary during a few select weeks. This person will not work on university observed holidays. This is an in-person position with some remote workdays possible. There will be no relocation assistance for this position

    Required Job Qualifications

    + Bachelor’s degree

    + Direct experience working in student success initiatives (minimum one year of full-time experience, or two years of part-time experience)

    Preferred Job Qualifications

    + Direct experience in a higher education career services environment (experience as a graduate student is acceptable)

    + Demonstrated direct experience working with a breadth of student and stakeholder populations

    + Proven ability to communicate effectively (orally and in writing) to both small and large audiences

    + Understanding of how student values and strengths impact career choice and development

    + Basic knowledge of career assessment instruments (such as MBTI , Strong Interest Inventory, Strengths Finder, etc.)

    + Current knowledge of college-related industries for student and career development (specifically industries in the natural resources, sustainability, wildlife biology, and/or land stewardship)

    + Experience and comfort working with a wide variety of technology platforms

    + Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment

    + Serve students by providing one-on-one career advising in appointment-based and drop-in formats on topics including but not limited to career and major exploration, job and internship search skills (networking, resume, cover letter, interviewing, job offer negotiation), and the graduate school application process.

    + Maintain strong working knowledge of student needs and how their background experiences impact career development.

    + Maintain strong working knowledge of CSU campus resources in order to best meet complex student needs.

    + Maintain solid working knowledge of employer and industry trends through collaborative work with the Career Center’s Employer Connections Team.

    + Create and deliver classroom presentations on career education-related content.

    + Regularly review gaps in student resources and work to address gaps by creating or vetting new resources.

    + Attend workshops, conferences, seminars, or other opportunities that enhance knowledge of career services and/or careers in the college related industries.

    + Create and deliver specialized career education presentations for both undergraduate and graduate students.

    + Partner with the Career Education Manager to design and lead innovative career programming, workshops, and events for students by applying knowledge of student interest areas, and exploring student needs related to career education.

    + Provide career advising and event support for Career Center events and initiatives.

    + Attend weekly all-staff Career Center meetings.

    + Serve Warner College students by providing one-on-one career advising in appointment-based formats on the following topics: career and major exploration, job and internship search skills (networking, resume/cover letter, interviewing, job offer negotiation), and the graduate school application process.

    + Help plan and execute one to two employer engagement events focused on Natural Resources every academic semester.

    + Attending meetings with Warner College Academic Success Coordinators, Student Success Team, student organizations, and college partners as needed.

    + Assist in marketing and promotion of career education through social media, newsletters, and the Warner College Career Services website.

    + Create and deliver specialized career education presentations for natural resources students, both undergraduate and graduate studies.

    + Stay up to date with job trends, desired skills, and career-related news for the field of natural resources.
