    General Statement

     

    In support of the Montana State University mission, University Information Technology promotes, develops, delivers, and facilitates the use of information technology services and resources.

     

    Duties and Responsibilities

     

    Server Administration

     

    + Provide senior level system administration of MSU’s enterprise Linux, ERP , and Windows server environments.

    + Provide system administration for production and non-production servers including high level proactive administration of cloud, virtual, and physical systems.

    + Configure, install, and support new servers, services, applications, manage VDI pools; and plan, test, and deploy all patches and updates in accordance with UIT Change Management practices, security guidance and standard operating procedures.

    + Monitor performance, capacity, and security and assess system functionality and integrity. Maintain backups in coordination with enterprise backup standards and solutions.

    + Design, implement, and maintain automated system workflows to improve infrastructure efficiency and reliability, leveraging scripting, automation frameworks, and AI-driven solutions to proactively identify and resolve performance bottlenecks and repetitive tasks.

    + Drive and ensure compliance with security requirements by actively participating in audits, implementing best practices, and collaborating with security teams to guide decisions and influence architecture where necessary.

    + Participate in management and support of large scale storage, virtualization, and high performance computing environments. Implement automation and process improvement across aspects of system, application and access administration.

    + Serve as a Subject Matter Expert and help educate other members of the team.

     

    Cloud Computing and Application Management

     

    + Configure, integrate, and implement cloud computing applications and services.

    + Manage the deployment, configuration, and lifecycle of enterprise applications, ensuring performance, reliability, and security while coordinating updates, patches, and user access in alignment with business and operational needs.

    + Provide on-going management and support for cloud applications and services.

    + Research, troubleshoot, and resolve problems through collaboration with UIT staff, vendors, and end-users.

    + Evaluate, deploy, administer, maintain, and support cloud and on premises enterprise applications. Provide high level support with vendor and partner management.

     

    Technology Support

     

    + In coordination with UIT and Unit Leadership provide support across all aspects of the design, implementation, and on-going use of MSU technology.

    + Provide direction and implementation of network and system technologies that support Montana State University.

    + Develop, plan and implement projects around the IT infrastructure that support the MSU vision and are strategic to future growth.

    + Lead and enforce change management processes to ensure controlled, documented, and risk-assessed modifications to systems and infrastructure, minimizing disruption and maintaining compliance with organizational standards.

    + Participate in the shared services model bringing positive and progressive levels of customer service across the MSU Enterprise, Affiliate, College, and Units.

    + Provide advanced technology support to further MSU’s educational, research, and outreach enterprises.

    + Respond to, track, and resolve support tickets in a timely and efficient manner, ensuring issues are properly documented and prioritized while providing clear communication to end users and stakeholders.

     

    Consultation

     

    + Work closely with MSU’s Enterprise Services Group to plan, support, troubleshoot, and maintain ERP systems and applications.

    + Provide server system consulting for Enterprise, Affiliate, College, and Units including the planning and designing of hardware, software, and integration needs.

    + Assist with the analysis and troubleshooting of performance and potential security issues.

    + Provide telephone, e-mail, and level two Help Desk ticket system support.

    + Train and document processes as needed by team members and end users.

     

    Security Responsibility

     

    + Follow information security best practices, actively monitor and resolve identified vulnerabilities, and abide by university security policies and the guidance of the Information Security Group.

    + Positively communicate and encourage security best practices throughout campus.

    + Assess information security needs and recommend best practices among customers, including proactively asking questions to determine security needs and recommending solutions in accordance with university security policies and the guidance of the Information Security Group.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

    + Bachelor’s degree in a technology related field (such as computer science/engineering, information technology etc.) or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

    + Demonstrated expertise with Linux systems administration.

    + Demonstrated expertise in administering and deploying systems infrastructure technology in areas such as: Linux and Windows OS, security implementation including host firewall and server hardening configurations, virtual server technologies, cloud environments, identity and access management, virtual desktop infrastructure, research computing systems, and/or load balancing technologies.

    + Demonstrated expertise administering system patches and updates.

    + Demonstrated expertise with common backup and recovery technologies.

    + Demonstrated expertise with security-related policies and guidelines, knowledge of security best practices and typical business requirements and functions associated with security practices.

    + Ability to work effectively and collaborate with University IT staff in a team-oriented environment, to manage time effectively and efficiently managing competing technical priorities and problem solve independently as well as part of a team.

    + Ability to be a forward, creative, positive, and flexible thinker, exercise good judgment and make sound decisions.

    + Ability to learn on the job, staying current with relevant technologies and industry practices.

    + Ability to serve as a subject matter expert and training resource for other members of the team.

    + Ability to assist in planning, architecting, and design for long range IT projects and initiatives.

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

    + Demonstrated experience in an enterprise environment.

    + Demonstrated experience implementing and administering cloud based laaS.

    + Demonstrated experience administering RedHat Enterprise Linux, Windows Server OS I Active Directory, Vmware vSphere, SAN / NAS technologies.

    + Demonstrated experience with automation and/or various scripting languages such as Powershell, Bash, Python, Perl, etc.

    + Ability to analyze system components and support options to break down and resolve problems.

    + Skilled at communicating technical product knowledge in an understandable form to technical and non-technical personnel.
