Associate Director, School and Out-of-School Programs

Position Summary :

Children's Education seeks a dynamic School and Out-of-School Partnership Program Coordinator to lead middle and high school enrichment initiatives. This role supports overall GreenSchool operations and is the lead staff member developing and facilitating special enrichment programming. This is a full time, grant-funded position through the end of September 2026.

For each program, the Coordinator will create phenomena-based, culturally responsive curricula to engage students with NYBG's mission. Programs will focus on plant science, conservation, horticulture, and education-connecting students to real-world science, career pathways, and climate action especially as it relates to the health of the Bronx River watershed where school partners are located.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities :

+ Design and facilitate exhibition-themed workshops aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)

+ Develop lesson plans and daily schedules, sourcing and manage supplies, teach sessions, and ensure a clean, organized program environment.

+ Implement research-based science instruction that fosters curiosity and evidence-based thinking.

+ Collaborate with GEAR UP Coaches and CASA Project Associates on pre- scheduling and program logistics.

+ Coordinate mentorship experiences with Garden professionals.

+ Document program activities for funding matches, institutional memory, and community engagement (photo journals, presentations, social media, blog submissions)

+ Supervise and mentor program assistant for materials organization and prep, clean up, and evaluation documentation and photography

+ Collect and analyze student and teacher feedback through surveys and science journals.

+ Travel to CASA partner schools and transport supplies/materials using a personal or NYBG-provided transport.

+ Participate in the Children's Education professional learning community to enhance science teaching in both outdoor and classroom settings.

+ Support GreenSchool Workshops and Tours as needed, including program preparation, materials management, direct teaching, and program cleanup.

+ GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs):

+ Six (6) School-Time Green Career Paths at NYBG Days

+ Two (2) Spring and Summer Recess Science workshops

+ Two (2) Family Engagement Evenings

+ CASA (Cultural After School Adventures):

+ Four (4) Field trips to NYBG (program launch and culmination)

+ Three (3) 8-week afterschool hands-on ecological restoration workshops

+ NYCPS Summer Recess Careers at NYBG

+ One (1) one-week Summer Camp for 6 th grade students

+ NYBG Field Camp

+ One (1) three-week middle school NYBG camp

+ Community Outreach and Engagement

+ Occasional interdepartmental collaborations to table at local festivals and school fairs

Qualifications :

+ Potential candidates must have an undergraduate degree with experience in informal outdoor or museum education. Strong background in ecology, botany, or horticulture science.

+ Demonstrated horticultural expertise in hands-on native plant restoration and invasive species management.

+ Familiarity with Next Generation Science Standards and three­ dimensional learning principles.

+ Excellent oral communication and organizational skills are required. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment

+ Ability to work in all weather conditions and to be flexible and responsive in a complex, dynamic and fast-paced environment. Proven ability to spark curiosity and engagement among teen audiences.

+ Valid NYS driver’s license required.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to, at minimum, stand; walk; sit; use hands, handle tools, use motorized vehicles/ reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Work outdoors under a variety of weather conditions.

Baseline Work Schedule:

35 hours per week, Monday-Friday 9am-5pm

Salary is $63,000.
