    Job Description

    As an integral part of a team, the Critical Care Paramedic is responsible for patient care and support activities surrounding the coordination and performance of patient transfers/transports/emergency responses. Incumbent is cognizant of and adheres to the philosophy, standards, objectives and policies of the Department and the Hospital System.

    Qualifications

    + Four-year high school diploma or equivalent.

    + Successful completion of training program as an Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic and completion of protocol updates as required.

    + An associate or bachelor's degree is preferred.

    + Three years of recent full-time (or equivalent) professional paramedic experience in a high-volume EMS system. Candidates with at least one-year of full-time (or equivalent) professional 911 paramedic experience in a high-volume EMS system are preferred.

    + Twelve months of recent full-time critical care paramedic transport experience in a role that provides direct ICU-level patient care. The scope of work must be representative of the work to be performed in the role at Mount Sinai. Candidate experience will be evaluated to see if it is a qualifying match for this role. Candidates that lack 12 months of critical care transport experience, as described above, may substitute this experience with CCP-C, FP-C, CCEMT-P certification. These credentials are deemed a qualifier for the role. 1. Certification as a NYS EMT-Paramedic2. Valid tristate issued driver’s license with exceptional driving record / abstract1. NYC REMAC paramedic certification2. American Heart Association: BLS, PALS and ACLS3. American Academy of Pediatric certification: Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) 1. International Board of Specialty Certification (ISBC):Critical Care Paramedic-Certified (CCP-C)2. National Certification Corp. (NCC): Certification in Neonatal Pediatric Transport (C-NPT)

     

    All above listed licensing and certification requirements must be obtained and maintained throughout employment. Failure to obtain required licenses / certifications within the specified timeframe, and/or failure to maintain them throughout employment, will result in removal from the critical care paramedic position and potential termination.

     

    If applicable, obtain additional license(s) /certification(s) to meet operational needs / regulatory compliance.

    Responsibilities

    1. Within scope of training and certification, and within all variations of team composition, the Critical Care Paramedic will provide comprehensive, effective and safe patient care during all patient encounters, including ICU-level care throughout inter-facility transport of all patient populations.

    2. As a component of clinical care, attains and maintains expert proficiency in the use of all current and future biomedical devices that are applicable to patient transfer / transport. Examples include, but are not limited to: mechanical ventilators, high-frequency ventilators, infusion pumps, intra-aortic balloon pump, video laryngoscopy device, circulatory assist devices, pacemaker, infant transport isolette, nitric-oxide delivery system, body temperature control device, EKG monitor / defibrillator, invasive monitor, etc.

    3. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area.

    4. Observes patient behavior and responses to treatment, reports and records routine and specific patient data, such as: blood pressure, pulse, temperature and respirations. Documents findings in EMR.

    5. Works collaboratively with all members of the healthcare team, both internally and externally.

    6. Promotes, supports and positively represents the Mount Sinai Health System and the EMS department to all internal and external customers.

    7. Demonstrates the ability to perform clinical/technical/service/administrative tasks.

    8. Function as ambassador to patients and their families. Assist them in navigating the patient transfer process and provide them with a positive impression and experience with the Mount Sinai Health System.

    9. When on an ambulance shift, and not actively engaged in patient transport activities or EMS department functions, incumbent will do rotations within various relevant care settings, such as the ED, PICU, NICU, OR, etc. The objective is to support continued education for the critical care paramedics.

    10. In support of quality patient care and billing activities, perform compressive, accurate and timely (completion and submittal) patient care documentation.

    11. Ensure the safety of the patient at all times.

    12. Maintains exemplary driving record and operates ambulance with great skill and care.

    13. Attain and maintain expert ability to operate and troubleshoot all ambulance mechanical and patient support systems and technologies.

    14. Maintain current strong working knowledge of the critical care transport industry.

    15. Attends required meetings and training sessions.

    a. This includes a lengthy initial orientation and training program.

    i. This, and all training sessions and meetings, may take place in varied locations and will entail work hours that will may from the operational ambulance work schedule.

    16. Actively engage in self-learning / self-study of information related to critical care transport patient care and knowledge required to attain and maintain required licenses and certifications.

    17. Actively participates in QA / QI activities.

    18. Incumbent must actively and collaboratively participate in, and adhere to, applicable scheduling and vacation usage policies and practices.

    19. As necessary, to fulfill weekly work hours, incumbent may be assigned to other critical care team related duties, such as QA work / case review.

    20. As necessary to maintain core paramedic skills, incumbent will work an occasional 911 shift.

    21. Wears issued uniform and maintains professional appearance while on duty.

    22. Restocks supplies and cleans ambulance and equipment as needed.

    23. Assumes an active role in maintaining ambulance supplies at operational location.

    24. Must have expert ability to utilize all applicable technology.

    25. Must complete all compliance requirements by their deadline.

    26. Other duties as assigned.

    Compensation Statement

    Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $51.9688 - $52.5021 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
