    Faculty Job Description

    The Department of Physics & Astronomy at Stony Brook University invites applications for a Tenure Track Assistant Professor faculty position in accelerator physics. Applicants in all areas of accelerator physics are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will join the accelerator physics group in the Physics & Astronomy department and report to the Chair of the Physics and Astronomy Department. The accelerator group engages in a wide variety of research activities covering topics in conventional and advanced accelerator physics. The current research focus of our faculty includes the coherent electron cooling (CeC) of hadron beams, development of SRF cavities, and laser- and beam-driven plasma-based particle acceleration. This research is carried out in collaboration with national research facilities, primarily the nearby Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), but also with SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory amongst others. While pursuing their independent research goals, the successful applicant will be expected to join and strengthen the Stony Brook accelerator physics group by complementing this research effort. Candidates working on advancing accelerator physics for future colliders are particularly encouraged to apply. These include the Electron Ion Collider at BNL as well as Higgs factories or 10 TeV pCM energy colliders outlined by P5 and the muon collider recommended by the recent National Academy of Sciences report.

     

    The accelerator group also has a strong commitment to helping develop the accelerator workforce which is recommended as a national priority in the P5 and NAS reports. The group hosts the Center for Accelerator Research and Education (CASE): a collaboration between Stony Brook & BNL since 2008, and has established Ernest Courant Traineeship (ECT) in Accelerator Science in 2019, which is continued to be funded by the Department of Energy. The new faculty member is expected to teach one of the accelerator physics courses offered by CASE/ECT curriculum as part of their teaching of undergraduate and/or graduate courses in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. They will also be expected to encourage, and as appropriate participate in, the research and mentorship of graduate students and postdoctoral associates. The faculty member will participate in departmental, university and professional service.

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications:

    PhD (or foreign equivalent) in accelerator physics or a related field. Demonstrated ability to perform research independently and as part of a group. Significant (>3 years) hands-on experimental research in an accelerator physics project. Demonstrated track record of publication of research in high quality peer-reviewed journals and delivery of presentations at major conferences. Expert knowledge of techniques of accelerator physics. Clear and concise oral and written communication and interpersonal and analytical skills.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Post PhD work experience on an accelerator physics project. Demonstrated ability to organize and lead an accelerator physics experiment or collaboration. Previous experience on a current accelerator project. Experience in securing funding in a competitive proposal process to carry out research. Previous mentoring and teaching experience. Experience with accelerator operation, design, and construction. Experience working with a diverse student body and/or the ability to contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the Department and University.
