    Position Summary Information

    Position Summary

    The Counselor/ CSTEP Admissions Coordinator is a twelve-month, full-time, professional staff member in the Opportunity Programs Office. The position will assist the Director of Opportunity Programs in administering the duties outlined in the CSTEP grant, including coordinating, monitoring, evaluating, and providing support structure for program students, and assist the Director of Opportunity Programs in her daily work schedule. In addition, the Counselor/ CSTEP Admissions Coordinator will work with the Counselor/HEOP Admissions Coordinator in the planning and implementation of the Summer Institute, including preparing and administering the CSTEP Summer Program as part of the Summer Institute. The incumbent reports to the Director of Opportunity Programs and the Summer Institute.

    Major Responsibilities

    A. Maintain records of program students’ compliance with state guidelines; keep the Director and staff informed of all enrichment and academic support activities and plans as it relates to Program students; assist Director in preparation of CSTEP reports; assist in the development and administration of pre- and post diagnostic testing of math and science skills for Program students; assist in curriculum development and implementation of Summer Institute.

    B. Plan and implement CSTEP activities and outreach services; provide curricula support and instruction, which prepares and introduces pre-freshmen to the requisite math and science skills necessary to succeed in their chosen field of study; participate in the development of innovative instructional approaches to enhance the academic development of Program students; plan and conduct workshops and seminars to expose and broaden student awareness and understanding of the various scientific, technological and licensed professions; expand and maintain current and updated information regarding existing fellowships, internships, scholarships, and summer enrichment programs for students interested in pursuing a course of study in the scientific, technological, and health science fields; provide group review sessions, individualized tutoring, and skill building activities that will enhance student persistence and success in their chosen fields of study.

    C. Advise Opportunity Program students in selection of courses and develop successful academic programs; provide academic advisement and career counseling; monitor academic progress of students and inform students of institutional procedures, supportive services, and pertinent deadlines; establish and maintain an advising relationship with Program students majoring in the math, science, and technological fields; provide academic and career counseling and advise students in the selection of courses and academic programs of study; provide students with adequate and accurate information regarding academic requirements and regulations of the University and Opportunity Programs; monitor the progress of Program students, and maintain accurate records of all advising contacts and each student’s academic performance, including information relative to difficulties they may encounter and referrals for other services; assist students in formulating academic plans by providing pertinent data to students regarding prospective majors, minors, and related information about internships, graduate, and professional schools; inform each student, in a timely fashion, of changes in University-wide and Program policies, procedures or regulations; develop and initiate a supportive network that helps students overcome obstacles to earning a degree: provide CSTEP curricula and instructional support in math and science for the pre-freshman Summer Institute

    D. Maintain student counseling logs and contact records. Collect and report data necessary to assess the effectiveness of counseling interactions as well as student programs. Maintain an ongoing dialogue with the faculty in support of the student development programs. Attend staff meetings within the Opportunity Programs office and other department meetings as requested.

    E. Develop and provide math and science enrichment and support activities for Program students; work closely with the Math and Science faculty in developing academic support services; identify and invite professionals in the scientific, technological, and health fields to offer seminars which share information with Program students about their experiences in the work setting, and how students can best prepare for their chosen career; develop and coordinate student workshops and field trips provide students’ insights to the different work settings, and to enhance their understanding of the various licensed careers and health professions.

    F. Collect and maintain specific data needed to carry out official responsibilities and submit semester and annual advising reports as requested by the Director; assist in data collection to assess program outcomes; conduct on-going semester analysis of the use of math and science services by program students, according to intended major and class standing; assist in the preparation of internal and external proposals and reports at the request of the Director; prepare reports and collect data about the academic progress of students majoring in allied health, computer science, and sciences.

    G. Participate and engage in Academic Affairs initiatives and programs, including but not limited to serving on Academic Affairs committees, serving as a diversity advocate or community liaison for a job search, advising a club, and engaging in institutional cultural and celebratory events and programming. Takes an active role in the development of the department’s strategic and operational plans as required by department leadership. Works closely with the department Director to develop and implement operational goals that support departmental success.

    Driving Responsibilities

    Be able to drive a 12-passenger van to occasionally transport students to events/field trips. Must maintain a clean driving record as defined by University insurance carrier guidelines. Motor vehicle records will be monitored regularly using the NYS License Event Notification Service or License Monitor, Inc. for out-of-state licenses. Will be required to attend van training annually. May perform other related duties as assigned.

     

    Travel

     

    Accompany Director to regional meetings and state trainings.

     

    **Supervises** Opportunity Programs CSTEP Intern

    Education & Experience Qualifications

    + Bachelor’s degree in student personnel, counseling, or related field. A Master’s Degree is preferred.

    + Ability to initiate and implement student developmental programs.

    + Prior experience in providing counseling support services to “high-risk” students is preferred.

    + Evidence of strong organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills.

    + Strong work ethic and ability to work with a team of professionals.

    Minimum Skills/Abilities

    + Proficiency in Spanish is desirable but not required.

    + Must possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving record (as defined by University insurance carrier guidelines)
