    Scope of Job

    We seek applicants who are dedicated to servingThe University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’sstudent body as an Assistant Professorof Archaeology in the Department of Anthropologybeginning in the 2026-2027 academic year. We seek candidates with a research focus on North America, though the specific temporal focus is open, as are geographic and analytical expertise. Preference will be given to candidates who can teach a course on Texas Archaeology and who are willing to develop local research opportunities with the potential to benefit our students and local communities. The successful candidate will be able to teach introductory-level courses in anthropology and upper-division and graduate courses in the candidate’s sub-field of specialization.

     

    The department seeks a candidate who can make contributions to our undergraduate majors in anthropology, including our concentration in Archaeology, and our Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies. Additionally, the successful candidate for this position will have the opportunity to collaborate with scholars in the Community Historical Archaeology Project with Schools ( CHAPS ), and Public Heritage and Community Engagement ( PHCE ) programs in the College of Liberal Arts as well as researchers in the School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences ( SEEMS ), the School of Integrative Biological and Chemical Sciences ( SIBCS ), and the School of Medicine. Applicants should have an active program of research and scholarly publications, documented classroom excellence with innovative course delivery, and demonstrated record of funded research.     Minimum Qualifications

    1) Ph.D. in Anthropology (or related field) with degree conferred by August 31st, 2026, from an accredited institution of higher education, 2) an active program of research and scholarly publication, and 3) experience or demonstrated potential for teaching excellence.

    Discipline Specific Required Qualifications

    18 credit hours or more of graduate level work in Anthropology

    Preferred Qualifications

    1) Ability to teach or willingness to develop a Texas Archaeology course, 2) experience or demonstrated potential for mentoring students at the undergraduate and graduate level, 3) evidence of external research funding or a well-designed plan to obtain future external funding, and 4) Potential for developing local research opportunities to benefit our students and local communities.

    UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program ( ORP ) instead of TRS , subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
