    Job Summary

    Human-Centered AI and Social Impact

    Position: Tenured Associate/Full Professor

The School of Social Work seeks an exceptional mid-career or senior scholar with an established research program at the intersection of artificial intelligence and social impact. This position advances the school's mission as leaders in scholarship, education, and service for communities in Michigan, the United States, and across the world. Faculty members respond to social challenges in this highly technological world by supporting scholarly excellence in health and social services, drawing on scientific and critical theories to understand social challenges and develop translational solutions.

The ideal candidate will leverage AI methods and tools to address fundamental social challenges to health and wellness in communities, including homelessness, poverty, substance misuse, and other social determinants of physical and mental health. We seek a world-class scholar who will advance research on critical issues in social work by using and developing AI tools to reduce risk and promote better health outcomes, while also critically examining these tools to uncover and minimize potential bias and the systematic reproduction of inequities.

The position requires the capacity to provide leadership and mentoring in areas such as community-engaged AI development, natural language processing for mental health applications, multi-agency data integration, digital therapeutic tool development, resource optimization for social services, and workforce augmentation in human services. We seek candidates with a strong collaborative orientation, the capacity to mentor early-career scholars and doctoral students, a strong record of extramural funding, and an exceptional portfolio of publications and dissemination products. This search includes the potential for appointment to an endowed chair for exceptional candidates working in selected areas.

This position is part of a university-wide cluster hire in Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, offering exceptional opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with faculty across the School of Information, College of Engineering, School for Environment and Sustainability, and Law School, with support from the Michigan Institute for Data & AI in Society (MIDAS).

    Required Qualifications*

A doctoral degree in social work or a related field is required. An MSW degree or equivalent is preferred.
