Job Summary
The School of Social Science and Global Studies at The University of Southern Mississippi invites applications for a one-term Visiting Assistant Instructor or Visiting Assistant Teaching Professor of Sociology to teach online for theSpring 2026 semester only. The position is non-renewable.
A successful candidate with a PhD in sociology by December 2025 will be hired with the title of Visiting Teaching Professor. We are seeking candidates in any field of sociology committed to excellent teaching and experience engaging with all student populations. We are looking for a candidate who will teach four online classes during the spring 2026 term, including two online sections of introduction to sociology (SOC 101) and two online sections of sociology of the family (SOC 214).
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
+ Teach four online courses in Spring 2026 semester as noted above.
+ Support the success of diverse students
+ Hold regular office hours.
+ Attend faculty meetings as determined by Director of School of Social Science and Global Studies and the Coordinator of the Sociology program.
+ Provide service in order to assist the functioning of the Program and School.
+ Assist in collecting assessment data as outlined by the Program Coordinator.
+ Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in Sociology and experience teaching online.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
+ Knowledge of the teaching field; skill in delivering required knowledge and ability to engender learning in students.
+ Use of Canvas and ability to teach online both synchronous and asynchronous.
+ Professionalism in all activities, participating in a collegial, ethical and responsible manner.
+ Ability to respond to inquiries from students, staff and administration in a timely manner as stipulated.

PhD in Sociology conferred by December 2025
