About the Position
Under general supervision, performs inspections on residential, multi-family, commercial and industrial buildings in the process of construction, alteration, or repair to verify compliance with approved plans and specifications for compliance to the Building, Plumbing, Mechanical and supplemental Codes as adopted by the City.
New hires generally start between $7,469.00 and $8,235.00 per month. Placement within the position’s full wage scale is based on qualifications and professional experience. The full wage scale for this position is between $7,469.00 and $9,532.00 per month.

The Planning and Development Department is responsible for land use and building permit review and approvals; long-range city and regional planning; building inspection; coordination of development review processes, design standards, and enforcement of the community development code. Edmonds provides a full range of services, including contracted fire services, police services a municipal court, a community pool, a regional performing arts facility, public works and utilities, a regional wastewater treatment facility, along with community events and services through our Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services Department. Six department directors report directly to the Mayor and oversee approximately 279 full–time-equivalent employees.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
+ Enforces provisions of the building construction codes adopted by the City.
+ Performs independent field inspections to examine and evaluate residential, multifamily, and commercial construction to verify compliance with approved plans and specifications.
+ Ensures compliance to the Building, Mechanical and Plumbing Code, Washington Administrative Code (WAC) amendments and Washington State Energy Code.
+ Coordinates inspections with the public and with other City Departments
+ Performs structural and non-structural plan review for residential, multifamily and commercial buildings to ensure that construction plans comply to the Building, Plumbing and Mechanical Codes, WAC (State) Amendments, Washington State Energy Code, Edmonds Development Code and applicable ordinances.
+ Maintains daily inspection records of construction progress, special inspections, field reports, approved plan revisions, etc. Maintains enforcement inspection records and prepares reports concerning code violations or inspection results in preparing cases for legal action. As directed by the Building Official, issues stop work correction notices for code violations; notifies Building Official regarding non-compliance.
+ Assists the public by phone and in the office on code questions, review of approved building plans and permit applications. Accepts permit applications as needed. Reviews and approves revisions to permitted plans and provides assistance and information to the public regarding required plan revisions.
+ Performs other related duties as assigned that are within the scope of this position classification.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
+ Associates Degree or two-year Technical Certificate in Building/Construction Technology, Planning or related field and two years of building code enforcement experience associated with a variety of building and construction types.
+ An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that will allow the incumbent to successfully perform the essential functions of the position may also be considered.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
+ A valid Driver's License at time of hire and a driving record that is acceptable to the City’s insurance requirements. Out of state candidates must obtain their WA State Driver's License within 30 days after moving to WA https://www.dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/moving.html
+ A criminal background check is required following a verbal offer of employment. Criminal history is not an automatic employment disqualifier. Results are reviewed on a case-by case basis.
+ ICC certified Residential or Commercial Building Inspector (B1 or B2) within 90 days from date of hire.
+ ICC certified Residential or Commercial Mechanical Inspector (M2 or M1) within 6 months from hire date.
