Description
As a part of the SUNY Empire Innovation Program (EIP) (https://www.suny.edu/eip/) , the Department of Chemistry at Stony Brook University seeks to hire a tenure track faculty member at the Associate or Full Professor level to begin in Fall 2026. The ideal candidate will have expertise in the synthesis of polymers and/or nanomaterials, including but not limited to the use of renewable feedstocks and/or novel recycling and upcycling strategies; design of precision polymers or materials; or polymer and nanomaterials processing and assembly, including advanced characterization and manufacturing approaches. Candidates in other fields of materials chemistry, including theorists, may be considered. Excellent candidates at the Assistant Professor level may be considered if they are qualified to be appointed at the Associate Professor level and have a significant track record of external funding and publications as an independent investigator and at least four years of experience in their independent research careers. The applicant must have a Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related field. The candidate is also expected to have already established a vibrant extramurally funded research program and have a strong commitment to teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Stony Brook University has a long-standing commitment to access and a record of attracting a broad student body, and the university has been recognized nationally for a high upward social mobility index, moving students from the lowest quintile of parental income to the top quintile of graduate income. We seek applicants whose record in research, teaching or service has prepared them to contribute to our institutional mission to educate and train a broad student population. Research in the Department of Chemistry is highly interdisciplinary, and faculty with interests in materials particularly benefit from close interactions with nearby Brookhaven National Lab (BNL), which provides state-of-the-art facilities for research in chemistry, nanoscience, and energy, including the Center for Functional Nanomaterials and the National Synchrotron Light Source II. Centers and institutes that promote interdisciplinary research include the Institute for Chemical Biology & Drug Discovery, the Laufer Center for Physical and Quantitative Biology, the Institute for Advanced Computational Science, DOE-funded Energy Frontier Research Centers on synthesis science and energy storage, the Center for Advanced Technology in Integrated Electric Energy Systems, and the Center for Advanced Study of Drug Action. The Department also has a strong history of excellence in graduate student mentoring, and an NIH-funded Chemistry-Biology Interface Training Program and NSF-funded Research Traineeship program in quantitative analysis of materials provide mechanisms for graduate student training and connectivity.
Candidates should submit a cover letter, a detailed curriculum vitae, a concise description of their research program and future plans, and a statement of teaching and mentoring experience and interests including plans for supporting a broad student population. Highlighting complementarity and synergy with ongoing research activities at Stony Brook University and the Chemistry Department is encouraged. Applicants should also provide the names and contact information for three references; references will only be solicited for a short list of candidates. All application materials should be submitted via https://apply.interfolio.com/173681 . Application review will begin **October 16, 2025** and will continue until the position is filled.
