    Job Summary and Qualifications

     

    This position will manage data engineers towards the successful development and maintenance of data pipelines using HCA’s Google Cloud Platform (GCP). This role will guide the teams that build and maintain data pipelines from all HCA source systems that require data to be integrated into the GCP. Additionally, this role will oversee the building and maintenance of pipelines that send and receive data to external vendors and affiliates.

     

    Data engineering managers should have advanced communication and interpersonal skills, be able to work well in teams, and be self-motivated. As a Data Engineering Manager, you manage your project goals, contribute to product strategy, and help develop your team. Operating with scale and speed, our exceptional data engineers are just getting started -- and as a manager, you guide the way.

     

    Data Engineering Managers have not only the technical expertise to take on and provide technical leadership to major projects, but also manage a team of engineers to build data pipelines and resolve architecture challenges. A data engineering manager is responsible for designing, building, optimizing, and maintaining data processing systems to ensure data is accessible and usable for analysis.

    What you will do:

    + Set and communicate team priorities that support the broader organization's goals. Align strategy, processes, and decision-making across teams.

    + Set clear expectations with individuals based on their level and role and aligned to the broader organization's goals. Assigns, delegates, and monitors the day-to-day work of data engineers. Meet regularly with individuals to discuss performance and development and provide feedback and coaching. Removes barriers and hurdles that stand in the way of the team’s success.

    + Oversees all the development and operational aspects of the Enterprise Big Data Management team.

    + Upholds and strengthens best practices and SOP’s in compliance with audit and regulatory standards along with any HCA or department specific defined guidelines.

    + Recruit, develop, and manage employees within area of responsibility to lead data engineers who build data pipelines into various source systems, and enable exploration and access for analytics, visualization, machine learning, and product development efforts across the company.

    + Establish and negotiate timelines with internal and external team members for completion of activities for a group of projects.

    + Oversee the service levels of enterprise data management applications.

    + Assist in the design and support of data flows required to support current and future Enterprise reporting initiatives. Data flows include any type of clinical or administrative data exchange such as HL7, CCD, or file extracts.

    + Interacts and builds relationships with various Data Management and other functional area colleagues.

    + Perform Employee Performance Evaluations.

    + Coordinate and communicate with external teams and leaders on a consistent basis to address data requests, project plans, and development activities.

    + Solve problems of non-routine nature and propose novel, practical approaches to data collection and management.

    + Strong analytical and technical skills with ability to analyze issues, assess technical risks, and recommend sound solutions in a timely manner.

    + Participate as Subject Matter Expert (SME) as required for requirements definition, design reviews, and tool selection of clinical data management and analytical platforms.

    + Successful introduction and implementation of tools, technologies, processes that make the team more efficient, productive and/or increase quality.

    + Ability to work under tight timelines.

    + Share passion for staying on top of tech trends, experimenting with, and learning new technologies, participating in internal & external technology communities, and mentoring other members of the engineering community.

    + Perform unit tests and conduct reviews with other team members to make sure our code is rigorously designed, elegantly coded, and effectively tuned for performance.

    + This role is central to the goal of rapidly increasing our capability to quickly access and analyze data for insights that enable the teams to drive improvements in business-critical areas.

    + Create data products for data science and business analyst team members to improve their productivity.

    + Foster a culture of sharing, re-use, and design for scale, stability, and operational efficiency of data and analytical solutions. Evaluate, implement, and deploy emerging tools and process for analytic data engineering to improve our productivity as a team.

    + Partner with data scientists, machine learning engineers, business intelligence engineers and solutions architects to develop technical architectures for strategic enterprise projects and initiatives.

    + Work closely with process owners, product owners and business users.

    + Responsible for implementing best practices around systems integration, security, performance and data management.

    + Empower the business by creating value through the increased adoption of data, data science and business intelligence landscape.

    + Performs other duties as assigned.

    + Demonstrate strong, problem solving, communication, organizational, time management, and multi-tasking skills.

    + Demonstrated leadership skills.

    + Experience working with complex and large volumes of data, and database applications.

    + Experience ensuring data quality across multiple datasets used for analytical purposes.

    + Experience with GCP tools and services.

    + Demonstrated ability to champion projects from beginning through implementation, meet deadlines, manage multiple priorities and perform job responsibilities accurately with minimal supervision.

    + Ability to lead research into data related issues.

    + Understands relational database, client server concepts, and software development life cycle methodology.

    + Ability to work independently, positively manage conflict, and work in a fast-paced environment.

    + Display detail-oriented approach to work.

    What qualifications you will need:

    Bachelor's degree in computer science, related technical field required

     

    Master's degree in computer science, related technical field preferred

     

    3+ years of experience in a leadership role required

     

    1+ year(s) of experience in Healthcare required

     

    5+ years of experience in Information Technology required

    5+ Years of hands-on experience with many of the following components:

    Spark Streaming, Kafka

     

    SQL, JSON, Avro, Parquet

     

    Java, Python, Scala

    3+ Years of hands-on experience with GCP platform and experience with many of the following components:

    Cloud Run, GKE, Cloud Functions

     

    Bigtable, Firestore, Cloud SQL, Cloud Spanner

     

    GoLang, Pub/Sub

     

    BigQuery, Dataflow, Data Fusion

     

    Cloud Composer, DataProc, CI/CD, Cloud Logging

     

    Vertex AI, NLP, GitHub
