Overview

A leading space systems organization is seeking a Sr. Ground System Architect to join its satellite engineering team. This role offers the opportunity to lead the technical vision and execution of ground systems supporting satellite missions, from concept through launch and operations. The position is ideal for an experienced engineer with deep expertise in systems architecture, satellite command and control, and cloud-based infrastructure.

Responsibilities

+ Serve as a technical leader for ground systems across satellite programs, including platform, network, and software architecture

+ Define and own the Ground Systems Roadmap, setting annual and multi-year technical objectives

+ Coordinate common ground capabilities across multiple programs and prioritize strategic and tactical needs

+ Conduct system modeling, performance analysis, and trade studies to mitigate technical risk

+ Integrate ground systems into broader engineering environments, ensuring documentation, testing, and updates are maintained

+ Lead mission and system design from proposal through launch and operations

+ Act as a subject matter expert in ground systems, advising engineering teams and program leadership

+ Allocate technical resources and mentor engineering staff to meet program goals

+ Support business development through technical leadership and customer engagement

+ Publish technical papers and participate in internal and external reviews

+ Ensure compliance with safety, reporting, and regulatory standards

Qualifications

+ Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in engineering or related technical field

+ 13–18+ years of progressive engineering experience depending on degree level

+ Minimum 8 years of space systems design experience

+ Minimum 5 years leading technical teams

+ Active TS/SCI clearance

+ Full lifecycle experience in systems engineering, architecture, and software development

+ Expertise in satellite command and control, mission planning, RF communications, and encryption

+ Proficiency in cloud technologies including AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, VMWare, Podman, and AWS EKS

+ Familiarity with cybersecurity frameworks such as RMF, NIST 800-53/171, and PKI

+ Experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) using tools like Cameo

+ Skilled in software languages including Python, C/C++, and Java

+ Knowledge of Open C3 Cosmos and Grafana dashboards

+ Understanding of spacecraft telemetry uplink/downlink, ground networking, and NSA Type-1 encryption

+ Ability to decompose system capabilities into JIRA epics and stories with clear acceptance criteria

+ Experience in multi-threaded software design and distributed computing environments

+ Strong communication and leadership skills for cross-functional collaboration and customer interaction

+ Demonstrated success in technical reviews, milestone planning, and systems integration

+ Expertise in ICDs, CONOPs, requirements development, and test planning

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $150000.00 - $250000.00/yr.
