    The Stony Brook University School of Social Welfare (SSW) invites applications for two (2) Full-Time Tenure-Track Assistant Professor positions to begin Fall 2026.

    Position Information

    Assistant Professor Tenure-Track with an anticipated start date of September 1, 2026. This is an academic year, 10-month appointment.

     

    Who We Are

     

    Stony Brook University (SBU) is a State University of New York (SUNY) flagship, an internationally renowned public research institution (R1), and a member of the Association of American Universities. The School of Social Welfare (SSW) is one of five Health Sciences Schools, located within a rich interdisciplinary environment. Numerous opportunities exist for collaborative research and interprofessional training across disciplines on campus and beyond. The Health Sciences Center is located on the Stony Brook Campus alongside Stony Brook University Hospital, the Cancer Center, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, and the Long Island State Veterans Home. In New York City, SBU is the anchor institution for the development of a world-leading climate solutions center on Governor’s Island, the New York Climate Exchange. The SSW offers Bachelor of Social Work (BSW), Master of Social Work (MSW), and PhD in Social Work degree programs, as well as multiple dual degree program options. The SSW has an extension education center in Manhattan, through which students can take MSW program coursework. The SSW is home to a collegial academic community committed to building a more equitable society based on the values of human dignity, inclusiveness, diversity, equality, and on economic, environmental, racial, and social justice. The school’s interdisciplinary research involves organizational partnerships from a wide variety of sectors (from community-based organizations to departments of health and social services) and academic disciplines (ranging from medicine and engineering to humanities).

     

    The SSW’s distinguished faculty engage in practice-oriented and policy-relevant research in several areas including disability justice; gender equality; intervention research; aging; intimate partner violence; the social determinants of health and mental health; structural racism; environmental justice; financial well-being; education; and immigration, among other areas. The SSW has an enrollment of approximately 750 students with curricula grounded in a student-centered and evidence-informed pedagogy. We are seeking two new faculty members to join our vibrant and engaged community, who will expand the research methodological strengths, areas of research, and instructional profile of the Stony Brook University School of Social Welfare.

    Qualifications

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    Applicants must have an earned doctorate (or foreign equivalent) in Social Work or a related field. A record of scholarly research, including evidence of publication and strong potential for securing external funding, commitment to an interdisciplinary academic environment, and minimum of one semester of social work relevant teaching experience inclusive of teaching assistant experiences.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    Applicants with an MSW, minimum of two years post-Masters social work practice experience, and a record of funded research.

    Campus Description

    Long Island's premier academic medical center, Stony Brook Medicine, represents Stony Brook University's entire medical enterprise and integrates all of Stony Brook's health-related initiatives: education, research and patient care. It encompasses Stony Brook University Hospital, Stony Brook Children's Hospital, the five Health Sciences schools -- Dental Medicine, Health Professions, Medicine, Nursing and Social Welfare -- as well as the major centers and institutes, programs and more than 50 community-based healthcare settings throughout Suffolk County. With 624 beds, Stony Brook University Hospital serves as Suffolk County's only tertiary care center and Regional Trauma Center. Stony Brook Children's, with more than 180 pediatric specialists in 30 specialties, offers the most advanced pediatric specialty care in the region. In the Medical and Research Translation (MART) building, two floors are occupied by Stony Brook University Cancer Center’s outpatient services, and four floors are devoted to cancer research.
