Job Description
A Glimpse of the Job
The Third Assistant Engineer (3AE) Mariner operates and maintains ships propulsion machinery and related systems; performs maintenance and repair support to the engine department and perform other duties as required by Chief Engineer/First Engineer; participates in shipboard practical oversight of cadets.
Essential Duties/Tasks:
Third Assistant Engineer
+ Performs the duties of a Third Assistant Engineer as directed by the Chief Engineer or his/her Designated Representative.
+ Operates and maintains all equipment and systems onboard the vessel by direction of the Chief Engineer or his/her Designee.
+ Performs as part of the Engineering Resource Management Team.
Watch Standing
+ Stands Engineering Watches Underway and Shore-Side.
Instruction and Other
+ Participates in the education and instruction of Engineer Cadets by direction.
+ Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:
+ High School Diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience. No experience required.
Required Licenses and Certifications:
+ Must hold a Current USCG License as Third Assistant Engineer of Motor Vessels of Unlimited Horsepower, STCW Certifications, STCW Medical Card, TWIC, United States Passport, and Valid United States Driver’s License.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Three years of experience as an engineering officer aboard a U.S. Flag, deep sea ocean going merchant vessel or comparable experience in the United States Navy.
+ Good communication skills.
+ Ability to work with and mentor college-age cadets. Experience working aboard a vessel with a High Voltage Integrated Electrical Plant with propulsion remote control and ACC or ACCU Notation.
+ USCG License as Third Assistant Engineer of Steam, Gas Turbine Vessels of Unlimited Horsepower Endorsement as Electro Technical Officer
+ US EPA Certification as a Universal Refrigeration Technician
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
+ Must Be Proficient in All Underway Engineering Watch-Standing duties.
+ Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
+ Ability to read and understand information displayed on various types of pressure gauges, flow meters, and other engineering equipment.

+ Diesel Engines, Electric Generators, Fuel Oil Purifier, Distribution Utilization Monitoring and Control High Voltage and Low Voltage Electric Motors, Chillers, Refrigeration Units, Air Handlers, Compressors, Distillers, Fan Coils, MSD Units and Associated Lift Stations, Drill Presses, Lathes, Galley and Laundry Equipment, Deck Machinery, Communication Equipment and Other Auxiliary Equipment as defined
Physical Requirements
+ Ability to repeatedly ascend / descend steeply inclined stairs and vertical ladders – day and night and in inclement conditions. Ability to crawl above, below, and around obstructions and interferences in order to access equipment and systems for operation and maintenance.

+ This position is security sensitive
+ This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TAMU policies, regulations, rules and procedures
+ All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and University safety requirements
+ Must pass USCG/DOT drug test prior to employment and participate in the University's random drug testing plan for drugs and Alcohol required by TAMU System and University Rule (34.02.99 M1, 8.6.1). Must be able to sail during all designated underway periods, including training crises aboard the training ship and present for shipyard periods or other periods ship is away from Galveston
