Job Description and Duties
The CalSTRS Technology Services Branch is seeking skilled and technically driven individuals to work as an Information Technology Specialist II within the SAP Solution Center in the BusinessDirect Solutions Unit.
The SAP Solution Center provides centralized technical support and oversight for CalSTRS’ enterprise SAP systems—BusinessDirect, SuccessFactors, Ariba, and Concur. S/4HANA is part of our roadmap for future implementation. This team handles Level 2 support, system integration, and ongoing enhancements. The focus is on reducing vendor dependence, standardizing processes, and building internal expertise. The goal is to ensure SAP solutions are aligned with CalSTRS’ business priorities and can scale to support secure, efficient operations across the organization.
BusinessDirect Solutions: The BusinessDirect Solutions Unit supports CalSTRS’ core ERP system, BusinessDirect. The team manages system configuration, integration, reporting, and technical operations for financial, procurement, and related processes. They serve as the go-to experts for BusinessDirect, helping ensure the system runs reliably, integrates well with other SAP tools, and meets the day-to-day needs of the business.
Under the general supervision of the Director of SAP Solutions, the BusinessDirect Technical Specialist acts independently as an SAP technical and functional specialist within the BusinessDirect Solutions team on the most complex information and accounting technology systems; planning, developing, and implementing technology solutions in conjunction with CalSTRS’ Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, an SAP solution internally called BusinessDirect (BD), that is essential to the mission of the overall organization of securing the financial future and sustaining the trust of California’s educators and affect large number of users in financial services and other parts of the organization who process transactions associated with financial statements, bank accounting, funds management, public sector collections and disbursements, materials management, travel, and procurement continously. The BusinessDirect Technical Specialist’s responsibilities also include acting as advisor on projects that impact BD, specifically the integration of other SAP and non-SAP systems, where their advice and plans proposed have significant impact on the organization’s business and financial success. The BusinessDirect Technical Specialist will have a strong understanding of SAP integration, functionality, configuration, and customization regarding all facets of the financial system. The decision authority of the BusinessDirect Technical Specialist on the BD system is critical because the consequences of errors in decision making or giving advice may have serious and/or long-lasting effects on CalSTRS operational efficiency, effectiveness, and financial reporting.
The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:
+ Experience leading project teams including business analysts, system engineers, system architects, subject matter experts, test coordinators, external entities, and users on project management methodologies to ensure compliance during the design, development, testing, training, implementation and integration of changes to an SAP solution.
+ Experience serving as a subject matter expert for selected functionality on an SAP maintenance and operations engagement supporting at least two of the following modules: Finance/Controlling (FI/CO), bank accounting, funds management, treasury management, public sector collections and disbursements (PSCD), materials management (MM), travel (Concur), and procurement (Supplier Relationship Management or Ariba).
+ Ability to coordinate infrastructure system design, modifications, system upgrades, and implementation projects.
+ Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and experience representing complex issues in relation to an enterprise-wide technology project, such as a large ERP implementation, to a wide range of audiences, including Directors, Project Stakeholders, and Business Area leadership.
+ Experience participating in SAP roadmap planning, performing analysis, and making decisions on various technology upgrades to align technology solutions with business strategies.
+ Demonstrated ability to manage technical incidents related to SAP interfaces and reports, including the review, research, and approval of written design specifications for enhancements.
+ Experience monitoring SAP system extracts and jobs to replicate data into the SAP Business Warehouse (BW) for reporting purposes utilizing BusinessObjects (BOBJ) and SAP Analysis for Excel.

Working Conditions
CalSTRS offers a hybrid approach including in-office and remote work solutions based on business needs.
Every 12 months, based on performance evaluation, employees may receive a 5% salary increase until they reach the maximum salary for the position.
In July 2025, the State of California implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025. This program reduces employees’ monthly base pay in exchange for paid leave credits. This position is subject to PLP 2025 and will have a monthly base pay reduction of 3% in exchange for 5 hours of leave credits for the duration of the program. The salary ranges shown on this job posting do not reflect the reduced amounts.
All staff of CalSTRS are employees of the State of California and subject to California employment taxes and withholdings. Upon appointment, staff are required to provide a current California address to CalSTRS Human Resources to be used as a remote work location.

STATEMENT OF QUALIFICATIONS:

Background Investigation
