Job Title: Substation Engineering Technician

Job Description

The Virtual Design & Data Solutions (VDDS) Engineering Technician 6 functions in a lead engineering technician capacity. Under general direction, the technician modifies or creates deliverables and performs assignments of a design nature by applying basic engineering principles and established design practices to develop complex design concepts. The role involves providing technical guidance and potentially directing other engineering professionals.

Responsibilities

+ Proactively provide guidance and direction using knowledge of standards, systems, document control, departmental guides, applicable codes, and company policies and procedures.

+ Review project requirements to determine the correct format and contents of the required deliverables.

+ Promote quality within the project, group, or section by reviewing design inputs for consistency and ensuring deliverables comply with specific codes and standards.

+ Apply basic engineering principles and established design practices in developing moderately complex design concepts and deliverables.

+ Make decisions with respect to deliverables and input interpretation, providing technical guidance to other professionals when needed.

+ Perform design calculations, detailed material quantities and estimates, and use advanced applications such as modeling and design software.

+ Coordinate with other design group personnel to review and exchange project information necessary for design development.

+ Assist with identifying key client interests and drivers, and communicate these to project team members.

+ Assist in developing and communicating appropriate design standards and process improvement activities.

+ Provide guidance to less experienced engineering technicians and assist with performance management, mentoring, and recognition.

+ Assist in monitoring staffing levels and available skill sets for projects, identifying resource application needs and process requirements.

+ Ability to use electronic applications and programs required for performing assignments, including CADD and information modeling systems

+ Advanced experience with AutoDesk Inventor (SDS)

+ Advanced experience with physical substation design (AIS and/or GIS)

+ Intermediate knowledge of engineering calculations

+ Advanced knowledge of engineering standards, systems, document control, and departmental guides

+ Intermediate industry knowledge and technology trends

+ Advanced knowledge of other disciplines

+ Basic knowledge of construction and constructability practices and principles

Additional Skills & Qualifications

+ Associate Degree in Drafting or an Engineering Design Related Technology preferred

+ Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering Design Related Technology preferred

+ Minimum of 8 years of related work experience

+ Intermediate knowledge of engineering design principles and applicable design guides

+ Basic knowledge of procurement and contract administration

+ Basic knowledge of process and procedures for project controls and estimating

Work Environment

The work environment includes the use of advanced technologies such as AutoDesk Inventor (SDS) and involves detailed design calculations and material estimates. Collaboration with diverse design groups and field activities may occur. The role requires adherence to project schedules and quality standards, with a focus on continuous improvement and client satisfaction.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $55.00/hr.
