Position Summary(Basic Job Function)
This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides professional support. Responsibilities may include general business, science, medical, agricultural or other professional support functions. Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call. On-Call allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.
Unit Position Summary
The Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory is seeking a Medical Technologist in the Clinical Pathology Laboratory section to perform and evaluate complex chemical and microscopic tests to provide timely, accurate diagnostic data for use by veterinarians; perform clinical laboratory procedures in the areas of clinical chemistry, immunohematology, hematology, coagulation, immunology, and urinalysis. Work hours vary including evenings, weekends and holidays. Duties associated with this position involve exposure to veterinary biological specimens, working with hazardous waste, use of regulated chemicals and biological materials, and working on a video display terminal greater than 25 percent of the time. Reporting to and working closely with the Clinical Pathology section manager, the Laboratory Technologist will be responsible for: 40% - Performs lab tests on specimens using automated and manual methods. 40% - Evaluates laboratory results for discrepancies in order to ensure proper reporting. Enters pertinent information into the computer in order to generate results. 10% - Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs of complex lab equipment and calibrates instruments in order to ensure reliable results. Maintains QA/QC records, identifies variances, resolves QA/QC issues. Troubleshoots as necessary. 5% - Participates in problem-solving, laboratory policy making, and information distribution. Participates in VDL activities, staff meetings, SOP's drafting, and process improvement efforts. 5% - Consults with veterinarians and other clients in order to provide information and lab results. Provides information that assists the client in their interpretation of test results. Working hours will be on-call from approximately 6:00 p.m. and will end shift at 11:00 p.m. and will include 1 to 2 weekends per month.
Desired Qualifications
Board certified as a MT or CLS (ASCP or BOR) or eligible as MT or CL S (ASCP or BOR)
