    Responsibilities

    The department of Radiation Oncology at Mayo Clinic in Arizona invites applications for the position of a clinical Medical Physicist.

    Organizational Relationships:

    The Physics Division supports an expanding clinical practice consisting of sixteen radiation oncology physicians and five radiation oncology residents. The Physics Division and its associated groups include eighteen physicists, four medical physicist assistants, four physics residents, two IT project analysts, two software developers, two linac engineers, and several postdoctoral researchers. The clinical practice consists of a proton clinic with four Hitachi pencil beam scanning gantries and a photon clinic with four Varian Truebeam linear accelerators, a mobile electron accelerator for intraoperative radiation therapy and an HDR afterloader.

     

    The photon clinic supports robust clinical service, including SRS/SBRT, TBI, TSET, SFRT, motion management/respiratory gating, IORT, HDR, LDR (eye plaques, Gamma Tiles), 3D printing of clinical accessories, etc.. The practice uses Aria R&V with Eclipse treatment planning systems. Additional systems include VisionRT surface imaging, Brainlab ExacTrac, Varian Velocity and MIM packages as well as limited use of the RayStation TPS. The department uses three Siemens CT simulators.

    Position Overview:

    The focus of this position is clinical service in the photon clinic, but opportunities also exist to participate in Education and Research. Patient Care, Education, and Research are core missions of Mayo Clinic and members of the Physics Division are encouraged to contribute to all three.

     

    The hired medical physicist will receive directions from the Chair of the Physics Division, Department Manager and Operations Administrator; Gives direction to dosimetrists, therapists, clinical engineers, physicist assistants, research assistants and other ancillary personnel; Exchanges necessary information with the Radiation Safety, Clinical Engineering, Clinical Research and Facilities departments. Participates in direct patient care and instruction.

     

    The primary responsibilities of the medical physicist position are to collaborate with radiation oncologists and other staff to design treatment plans and to manage equipment and procedures to ensure that patients receive the prescribed dose of radiation to the correct location. To perform and document the initial commissioning and calibration of radiation sources used for treatment and to manage the on-going quality management of the equipment. To provide the necessary data for patient dose calculations and to verify the accuracy of such calculations for each patient. To work collaboratively to develop and implement procedures for accurate and safe patient treatments. To investigate and implement advances in technology and procedures and to participate in on-going practice improvement efforts. To ensure that radiation treatments preserve the radiation safety of staff, patients, and public. To provide teaching instruction and mentoring to medical physics residents and to other staff and students. To participate in planning and budgeting processes.

     

    Current areas of interest include clinical workflow improvement through automation, clinical programming using vendor APIs, and clinical applications of artificial intelligence tools. Preference will be given to candidates with interest in joining the robust clinical programming group within the department. Preferred candidates will have a track record of performance pertaining to clinical service, teaching, and clinical research.

    Qualifications

    The candidate is required to have a postgraduate degree, either an M.S., M.A., D.M.P. or Ph.D. in medical physics or related field.

    Additional Qualifications

    Many opportunities for clinical and research collaboration exist between the three ACR accredited Mayo Clinic sites and locally through the Mayo Clinic and Arizona State University Alliance for Health Care. The clinical medical physicist has the opportunity to obtain academic rank through the Mayo Clinic Medical School if requirements are met. A Medical Physics Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship, sponsored by Mayo Clinic, is also hosted every year.

     

    License or Certification

     

    Preference will be given to candidates who are certified by the American Board of Radiology (ABR), American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP), or equivalent board in the appropriate disciplines of physics or who, if not certified, has entered the Board certification process and successfully completes it within three years of initial eligibility for the final part.
