We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Transportation Engineer & Project Manager to serve in an embedded capacity within the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT). This role is a unique opportunity to work side-by-side with CDOT staff, providing technical expertise, project leadership, and strategic consulting support on a wide range of transportation initiatives. As part of our team, you will act as a trusted advisor and integral team member within CDOT, helping to advance key infrastructure projects and mobility programs across the city.
The successful candidate must be self-sufficient, organized, and have the ability to communicate concepts clearly and concisely through writing and graphical representation. The candidate will report to the CDOT offices and is anticipated to be full-time and approximately 75% in-person with work-from-home flexibility. Evening and/or weekend hours may be required to support occasional public engagement events.
When you join us, you’ll be responsible for:
• Serve as an embedded consultant within the Department of Engineering at CDOT, representing our firm while working collaboratively with city staff and stakeholders.
• Lead and manage transportation engineering projects from planning through implementation, including roadway design, multimodal infrastructure, traffic operations, and safety improvements.
• Coordinate project scopes, schedules, budgets, and deliverables in alignment with CDOT priorities and citywide transportation goals.
• Provide technical review and guidance on engineering plans, specifications, and studies prepared by internal teams or external consultants.
• Facilitate interdepartmental coordination and public engagement efforts, ensuring transparency and responsiveness throughout the project lifecycle.
• Support grant applications, funding strategies, and performance reporting for transportation programs.
• Mentor junior staff and contribute to a culture of innovation, equity, and sustainability in urban mobility.
• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering
• Professional Engineer (PE) license in Illinois or ability to obtain within 6 months.
• Previous progressive experience in urban design and transportation engineering and project management
• Previous experience in project management or relevant management skills.
• Previous experience with CDOT and IDOT processes and procedures
• Strong understanding of urban transportation systems, multimodal design standards, and municipal project delivery processes.
• Proven ability to manage complex projects and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
• Experience working in or with government agencies, especially in embedded or on-site consulting roles, is highly desirable.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
