General Summary Statement
The employee is expected to promote organizational values of patient and visitor satisfaction by demonstrating courtesy and respect for patients and their families, visitors and other employees. Is expected to demonstrate competence in the assessment, treatment and care of patients whose ages range from early adolescence to adulthood/geriatrics. Is expected to exercise a wide latitude of independent judgment. Troubleshoots problems and reports actions taken and results to Manager. Capable of contacting Clinical Engineering or an outside service contractor when in-house troubleshooting fails, after consulting Manager.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Essential functions of the position include but are not limited to:
• Performs routine tests (spirometry, lung volumes, diffusing capacity, airway pressures, bronchodilator evaluation, induced sputum), specialized tests (exercise tests, arterial sampling, methacholine challenge studies), research protocols, performs and monitors quality controls.
• Maintains and monitors general integrity of both PFT and Cardiopulmonary Exercise equipment. Performs complex maintenance and troubleshooting procedures on instruments and equipment as needed. Requests service from Clinical Engineering when indicated.
• Possesses the patience and skills necessary to deal with special problems (i.e.: longer test times, patients with cognitive difficulties, special testing requests, equipment malfunction.)
• Training and mentoring new employees/students in pulmonary lab and exercise lab.
• Shows initiative in development and implementation of new procedures and contributes in assessment of current techniques.
• Maintains/monitors supplies in assigned work area.
•Maintains and generates reports for procedures performed and requisite billing functions.
• Is aware of patient privacy rights in regards to procedures and tests.
Marginal functions of the position include, but are not limited to:
•May cover the front desk or perform secretarial duties in emergency situations.
• Performs other duties in area of responsibilities as assigned.
Education, Training, and Experience
• Bachelor of Science preferred.
• Minimum of three (3) years of pulmonary function testing or respiratory care
•Proficient with Jaeger Vyntus PFT system
• Proficient with Jaeger Vyntus Cardiopulmonary Exercise system
• Proficient with Bedside Spirometer
• Proficient with calibration of PFT system
• Proficient with calibration of Cardiopulmonary Exercise system
• Proficient with Calibration of Bedside Spirometer
• Proficient in Testing Preparation
• Proficient with Spirometry (FVC, FVL, SVC, MVV, MIP/MEP)
• Proficient with Pre and Post Spirometry
•Proficient with Plethysmography (RAW, GAW)
• Proficient with Nitrogen Washout (TGV)
• Proficient with DLCO
• Proficient with Bronchial Challenge (Methacholine) Studies
•Proficient with Arterial Blood Gases
• Proficient with Six Minute Walk Test (6MWT)
• Proficient with the AirLife Mini Compressor with Nebulizer
•Proficient with the use and instruction of Filtered Nebulizers
• Proficient with the Massimo Pulse Oximeter
• Proficient with the use and instruction of an Aerobika
• Proficient with the use and instruction of an Incentive Spirometer
• Proficient with use and instruction of Peak Flow Meter
• Proficient with Smoking Cessation Information
• Proficient in Respiratory Mechanics
• Proficient in cleaning and processing PFT and Cardiopulmonary Exercise equipment
• Proficient in PFT Medical Gases, Changing Cylinders
• Proficient with Medlin Surgical Clipper
• Proficient with the Lab Tube System
Licensure/Certification
• Current license to practice Respiratory Care in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
• Certified Pulmonary Function Technician (CPFT) required, Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT), preferred.
• BLS required
• ACLS, PALS must be completed within 6 months of hire
