About the Board of Animal Health:
Creating a healthy, disease-free environment for Indiana's 31 million animals is no small feat. BOAH's team of veterinarians and animal health inspectors travel to all corners of the state to investigate possible outbreaks of disease and advise animal owners about disease prevention.
Role Overview:
This position is a District Veterinarian role, with primary responsibilities in Marion and surrounding counties.
Salary Statement:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $80,600.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
A Day in the Life:
As a vital member of Indiana’s animal health team, you’ll play a hands-on role in safeguarding livestock health and supporting the state’s agricultural integrity. Your work spans field inspections, disease prevention, regulatory compliance, and team leadership—all with the goal of protecting public health and animal welfare.
Core Responsibilities
+ Oversight & Compliance
+ Monitor and support private veterinarians to ensure proper testing, vaccination, and inspection protocols at farms, fairs, sale barns, and slaughterhouses.
+ Enforce state and federal animal health standards by identifying and rejecting diseased animals or products from sale.
+ Disease Surveillance & Diagnostics
+ Conduct field tests and inspections for regulatory and reportable diseases such as hog cholera, tuberculosis, brucellosis, and chronic wasting disease.
+ Collect and prepare blood samples for lab testing and assist in diagnosing complex cases.
+ Lead epidemiological investigations to trace disease origins and prevent future outbreaks.
+ Animal Care & Welfare
+ Uphold animal welfare standards by conducting investigations into suspected neglect, abuse, or mistreatment of livestock.
+ Ensure humane handling and care practices are followed at farms, fairs, markets, and other regulated facilities.
+ Collaborate with law enforcement and other agencies when necessary to enforce animal protection laws and support corrective actions.
+ Emergency Response & Incident Management
+ Respond to animal health emergencies such as disease outbreaks, natural disasters, or transportation accidents involving livestock.
+ Coordinate with state and federal agencies to implement containment, treatment, and recovery protocols.
+ Support rapid deployment efforts to protect animal welfare and minimize public health risks during critical incidents.
+ Education & Outreach
+ Serve as a resource to livestock associations and industry partners, providing guidance on disease control and prevention.
+ Promote collaboration and compliance with Indiana Board of Animal Health regulations.
+ Regulatory Inspections
+ Inspect laboratories, markets, and other facilities to ensure adherence to state laws and standards.
+ Maintain accurate records and documentation, including health certificates, permits, and inspection reports.
+ Leadership & Team Development
+ Recruit, onboard, and train staff, setting clear expectations and fostering professional growth.
+ Provide ongoing feedback, performance evaluations, and ensure quality standards are met across all operations.
Work Environment & Travel
This role is primarily field-based, requiring frequent travel to client sites for inspections, audits, and investigations. While most work is conducted remotely or on-site, occasional in-office meetings and events are expected. Work hours may vary to meet operational needs, optimize travel efficiency, and ensure timely completion of assignments.
What You'll Need for Success:
You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:
+ Must be licensed and registered to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Indiana, also accredited by the US Department of Agriculture – Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA-APHIS).
+ Broad knowledge of the principles and practices of veterinary medicine and the ability to identify animal diseases and symptoms.
+ Extensive knowledge of pertinent federal and state laws and regulations and the principles and practices governing the control and eradication of communicable and infectious diseases in livestock.
+ Extensive knowledge of livestock industry practices in the state.
+ Specialized knowledge of animal pathology and ability to perform autopsies on animals in the diagnosis of livestock diseases.
+ Ability to secure compliance with laws and regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially.
+ Ability to prepare clear and concise technical reports.
+ Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, farmers and livestock operators, federal government representatives and the general public.
+ Ability to communicate tactfully and firmly with a variety of different people encountered on the job.
+ Ability to make epidemiological investigations in disease outbreaks.
+ Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow.
+ Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets.
+ Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
