    Job Title: Medical Laboratory Technologist

    Job Description

    The Medical Technologist I is responsible for performing a variety of moderately or highly complex tests on patient and quality control samples for chemistry procedures. These tests may be conducted using manual methods that require technical interpretation or automated analyzers that involve maintenance and troubleshooting. The role also includes assisting in staffing the core laboratory and training laboratory personnel.

    Responsibilities

    + Perform moderately complex tests on various specimen sources such as blood, urine, and other body fluids using established procedures under close supervision.

    + Operate high-throughput analyzers and robotic automation to obtain optimal accuracy and precision of results in blood, urine, and body fluids.

    + Conduct critical care testing using blood gas and electrolyte equipment, co-oximeters, and whole blood glucose analyzers.

    + Operate instruments for therapeutic drug and drug of abuse analyses, including determining blood lead levels and screening blood for volatiles.

    + Perform immunoassay testing to determine levels of hormones, metabolites, drugs, tumor markers, and various ligands.

    + Execute special chemistry procedures such as HPLC and automated analysis, preparing reports for Hemoglobinopathy testing and Infectious Diseases.

    + Review test results before reporting, consulting with a supervisor when results are unusual or unanticipated.

    + Receive patient specimens, preparing them for testing or referral to other laboratories.

    + Perform established quality assurance procedures and maintain appropriate records.

    + Use the laboratory information system for all records functions and inquiries.

    + Maintain a neat, orderly, and safe working environment in the laboratory.

    + Communicate technical matters to physicians, staff, and customers.

    + Assist with the training of laboratory personnel, new staff, and students.

    + Perform other duties as assigned.

    Essential Skills

    + Degree in Chemistry or Medical Laboratory Sciences.

    + ASCP certification preferred.

    + One year of experience with Abbott Alinity and AMS middleware or Radiometer Blood Gas Analyzers.

    + Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).

    + Knowledge of handling potentially infectious specimen material.

    + Understanding of laboratory quality assurance programs.

    + Ability to identify and refer technical or clinical problems.

    + Effective communication with peers, supervisors, and healthcare staff.

     

    Additional Skills & Qualifications

     

    + Must meet CLIA requirements.

    + Completion of Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences is strongly recommended.

    + Completion of training on daily bench assignments with a staff technologist or supervisor.

    Work Environment

    The role is based in a laboratory environment, ideally during night shifts from 11:30 PM to 8:00 AM or from 3:30 PM to midnight. Flexibility in work hours within these shifts is preferred. The position requires adherence to OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens Control Act and maintaining a professional appearance and attitude.

    This is a Contract position based out of Chicago, Illinois.

    Pay and Benefits

    The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $40.00/hr.
