    Applications are now being accepted for the following positions in the Binghamton City School District for the 2025-2026 school year:

    Groundskeeper

     

    (8 hours per day/260 days per year)

     

    Salary: $33,422 per Contract

    In order to be considered for this opening, applicants must be:

    + + Currently on the Civil Service eligible list for the title, or

    + Currently appointed to the title, or

    + Eligible to take the exam for the title when it becomes available

    GROUNDSKEEPER

    DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

    This is unskilled work involving the maintenance of the grounds. Although the work is primary concerned with groundskeeping duties, incumbents may assist in work activities in the maintenance and care of building facilities and equipment. The work is performed under general supervision except when the incumbent is assigned to work on a special project under the direct supervision of a crafts person. May be called upon to perform snow plowing, snow removal and salting of walks and parking lots. Does related work as required.

    TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

    Mows lawns, seeds and fertilizes play fields and lawns; Lines play fields and ball fields for athletic events and cleans grounds after sporting events; Plants and cares for trees, shrubs, and flowers; Shovels snow from steps, building entrances, sidewalks and driveways and where necessary applies salt for ice control situations; May assists journey level workers or independently perform a variety of maintenance and custodial tasks such as painting, plastering, and plumbing; Helps to move equipment and furniture; May drive motor equipment in transferring operation, food stuff, and supplies.

    FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

    Willingness to perform unskilled manual work; willingness to work under all weather conditions; ability and willingness to develop a broad range of skills in building maintenance and custodial activities; ability to understand and carry out simple oral and written instructions; industry and dependability; Ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs including word processing, spreadsheet, and database at an acceptable rate of accuracy and speed; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Possession of the appropriate level operator’s license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.
