Northrop Grumman Space Systems—Launch and Missile Defense Systems has an exciting career opportunity for a Principal Software Engineer to join our team of skilled and diverse professionals. This position, based in Colorado Springs, CO, plays a vital role in supporting the U.S. President, the Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels.
This position does not offer relocation assistance and requires on-site work with no remote options.
Position Overview:
The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program is a vital part of the Missile Defense System. It provides a key operational platform that allows the U.S. president, the secretary of defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and tactical levels to systematically plan missile defense operations, monitor battle progress, and actively control networked sensors and weapon systems to achieve global and regional mission goals.
C2BMC offers a layered missile defense capability, providing an optimized response to threats across all ranges and flight phases. It acts as a force multiplier by connecting, integrating, and synchronizing autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations both worldwide and locally to improve overall performance. Additionally, C2BMC is a critical component of all ground and flight tests that verify and demonstrate the missile defense system's current and future capabilities.
The selected Principal Software Engineer will deliver essential backend software support for a complex system of applications used in the C2MBC-Global program, directly affecting the program's performance, efficiency, and ability to meet its goals. The Software Engineer must work independently while representing the organization to solve technical challenges and address complex issues. Failing to meet objectives in this role could result in delays to critical programs or increased resource expenditure.
Essential Functions:
In this position, the successful candidate will make significant contributions to the backend software engineering requirements of the **C2MBC-Global program** .
Key responsibilities include:
1. System and Feature Development:
+ Designing, implementing, and developing features for **Forge** , a new backend system built from the ground up. This system supplements other backend tools currently in use on the program, alleviating common difficulties
2. CI/CD Pipeline Management:
+ Assisting with the upkeep and streamlining efforts of **in-house CI/CD pipelines** that are critical for expanded integration testing
3. Application Maintenance:
+ Managing **GitLab merge requests** and addressing bugs or issues reported by teams relying on tools provided by the Tools Team
4. Troubleshooting and High-Priority Incident Response:
+ Addressing high-priority issues (PRs) that could impact program operations or deliverables
+ Offering technical support to other teams, ensuring reliable operation of developed tools and systems
+ Strong foundation in building, maintaining, and augmenting frameworks or backend systems
+ Working knowledge or hands-on experience with automation and CI/CD pipelines
+ Background in solutions development in **fast-paced, collaborative** environments is highly valued
+ Strong communicator, capable of frequent interaction with internal and external customers
+ Collaborative mindset with a team-oriented perspective
+ Problem-solving expertise and attention to detail, with the ability to address issues efficiently
+ A wide-ranging application of principles, theories, and concepts in software development
+ An ability to think critically and provide solutions to complex problems through imaginative and thorough methodologies
+ Self-motivation while working under general direction, with completed work reviewed for adequacy in meeting objectives
Basic Qualifications:
Please list your current security clearance and IAT or relevant certifications on your resume, if applicable.
+ Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline preferred from an accredited university and 5 years of related experience, or a Master’s degree in a STEM discipline and 3 years or experience, or a PhD and 1 year of experience; or 9 years of related work experience in lieu of degree may be considered.
+ Applicants must have a current, active in-scope DoD-issued **Secret** security clearance at the time of application, which is required to start
+ Ability and willingness to travel up-to 10% to support business needs.
+ Demonstrated experience in **backend software engineering** , specifically with **Python** and/or **MATLAB** programming languages
+ **Must-Have Expertise:**
+ **Python** development skills
+ **MATLAB** proficiency
+ Automation experience
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Familiarity with Bash/Unix scripting
+ Knowledge of **Java** or **Java Spring** for maintaining existing applications and frameworks
+ Exposure to **Agile workflows** and related tools such as **Jira** and **Confluence**
+ Competence in using team collaboration tools such as **Microsoft Teams** and **Mattermost**
+ Proficiency with source control tools such as **Git** and **GitLab**
+ Experience in maintaining and enhancing frameworks and related systems is also a significant advantage

Primary Level Salary Range: $100,300.00 - $150,500.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
