Position Summary
Under the direct, on-site supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and/or physician, the **Endoscopy Technician** performs delegated patient care tasks in both diagnostic and therapeutic gastroenterology/endoscopy procedures. This role includes both direct and indirect patient care activities and requires technical proficiency, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to safety and service excellence.
This position reflects the minimum essential responsibilities and functions required. The technician is expected to demonstrate competency prior to performing duties independently and may be assigned additional duties as needed.
Key Responsibilities
+ Assist in collecting patient data for objective assessment (e.g., vital signs).
+ Process specimens in accordance with clinical procedure guidelines.
+ Prepare patients for flexible sigmoidoscopy, including the administration of enemas as ordered.
+ Support physicians and RNs during diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures.
+ Maintain accurate documentation using unit systems (e.g., CIS), and assist with phone communication, filing, and charge processing.
+ Clean and disinfect endoscopes, rooms, and related equipment per protocol.
+ Manage endoscopy room turnover and ensure availability of necessary equipment and supplies.
+ Respond to emergency situations under the direction of the RN or physician.
+ Maintain a clean, safe environment in compliance with regulatory requirements and Baystate Health standards.
+ Participate in continuing education and demonstrate understanding of gastroenterology/endoscopy scope of practice.
+ Uphold professional, ethical, and legal standards of patient care and conduct.
+ Take on other duties or special projects as assigned by the Unit Manager.
Qualifications
Required Experience:
+ None required; training provided
Preferred Experience:
+ 6 months to 1 year of experience in a hospital or clinical setting
Skills & Competencies
+ Demonstrated competency in reading and math (aptitude test required)
+ Strong interpersonal skills and ability to follow detailed instructions
+ Capable of prioritizing multiple tasks in a dynamic environment
+ Successful completion of hospital orientation and training program
+ Moderate physical strength; must be able to lift, bend, and stand for extended periods
+ Good hand-eye coordination and mechanical ability
+ Intact or corrected vision and hearing
+ Ability to think independently and perform effectively under pressure or in emergency situations
+ Strong attention to safety and infection control standards
