RECRUITMENT: The State Highway Administration’s (SHA) Office of Transportation Mobility and Operations, (CHART) is recruiting for an Emergency Response Technician position statewide. This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum qualifications listed below.
This announcement may also be used for future SHA vacancies throughout the State of Maryland.

Nature of Work : The primary purpose of this position is to perform incident management/traffic congestion management duties. Emergency Response Technicians (ERT) provide guidance and advice to Emergency Traffic Patrol (ETP) operators, perform traffic control at incident scenes, assist disabled motorists, and report real traffic information to Statewide Operations Center (SOC) and Traffic Operations Centers (TOC). This is the entry-level of emergency response operations work serving SHA’s CHART Program. This position may operate special towing equipment and are required to respond to and remove disabled vehicles and/or other objects from obstructing traffic flow through and adjacent to SHA roadways and facilities. This position is also required, under supervision, to take appropriate action to resume regular traffic flow during incidents. The ERT maintains regular patrol routes and respond to routine incidents during patrols to provide emergency response at designated locations. This position maintains regular communication with and provides real-time information to SOC and TOC personnel through the use of in-vehicle computer systems and/or radio transmissions.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: One (1) year of experience performing emergency highway operations work, to include relocating disabled vehicles or directing the relocation of disabled vehicles, making minor repairs to disabled vehicles, or coordinating with emergency response departments to include fire, law enforcement, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and tow truck operators at crash scenes.
Note: Candidates may substitute equivalent U.S. Armed Forces military service experience for civilian experience cited above.
Licenses & Certifications
Candidate must possess a driver's license valid in the state of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
+ Employees are required to successfully complete agency training and certification programs to be eligible for permanent status in this classification.
+ Employees in this classification are assigned duties, which require the operation of commercial motor vehicles. These employees are required to possess a Class C Driver's License valid in the State of Maryland. During the probationary period, the employee will be required to obtain and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) valid in the State of Maryland, depending on the type of equipment operated that must be maintained for continued employment. This includes obtaining and maintaining a valid US DOT Medical Card (or MVA issued waiver) every two years.
+ During the probationary period, employee will be required to acquire certification as a light-duty tow truck operator.
