Overview:
The Office of General Counsel for the Georgia General Assembly is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Legal Assistant/Paralegal to provide support to attorneys in a fast-paced legislative environment. The ideal candidate will have excellent organizational skills and a strong foundation in research and document preparation and management, with the ability to handle confidential matters professionally and efficiently.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
The Legal Assistant/Paralegal will support attorneys in both litigation and legislative matters in a fast-paced legal environment. Key duties include, but are not limited to:
+ Initiates, organizes, and maintains electronic and physical case files.
+ Locates, collects, and compiles case materials; tracks and monitors case progress; updates records and closes cases according to office policies.
+ Drafts and edits documents, including correspondence, pleadings, memos, and legislative summaries.
+ Conducts research using Lexis, state codes, administrative rules, and case law databases.
+ Prepares research binders and written summaries.
+ Performs cite checking and document editing and proofreading, ensuring compliance with court and procedural formatting.
+ Files legal documents with state and federal courts via electronic filing systems.
+ Monitors court calendars, legislative tracking systems, and internal deadlines. Ensures timely filing and attorney scheduling.
+ Coordinates calendars for attorneys, schedules meetings, legislative hearings, and court appearances, ensures preparation materials are available.
+ Serves as an initial contact/resource for calls, emails, and in-person inquiries, receives and routes correspondence; interprets and explains procedures and policies.
+ Prepares a variety of written materials, including letters, summaries, and responses to internal and external inquiries.
+ Assists with the organization and hosting of annual seminars and other events.
+ Performs additional administrative tasks as assigned, with minimal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following:
+ A Paralegal certificate, diploma, or degree in paralegal studies.
+ An associate's degree and at least one year of paralegal or legal assistant experience.
+ At least three years of verifiable paralegal or legal assistant experience; or
+ A bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree (or significant completion of courses towards such degree) and the relevant experience and/or skill set.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ A paralegal certificate, diploma, or degree in paralegal studies.
+ An associate's degree and at least one year of paralegal, legal assistant, or other relevant experience.
+ Three years of verifiable paralegal, legal assistant, or other relevant experience.
+ Post-baccalaureate certificate in paralegal studies.
+ Associate's or Bachelor's degree from an ABA approved paralegal program.
+ Experience with state and federal electronic court filing systems.
+ Experience supporting litigation and/or legislative attorneys in a government setting.
+ Familiarity with Georgia legislative and legal process.
+ Competency in using Canva software.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
+ Proficient typing and data entry skills.
+ Strong organizational and time management skills.
+ High attention to detail and accuracy in document handling.
+ Strong written and verbal communications skills.
+ Ability to independently manage multiple tasks under deadlines.
+ Excellent work ethic.
+ Familiarity with LexisNexis, Westlaw, or similar legal research platforms or the ability to learn quickly.
High school diploma/GED and two (2) years of experience as a legal assistant in a legal environment; or certificate from a paralegal training program and one (1) year of experience in a legal environment; or one (1) year of experience required at the lower level Paralegal 1 (LET030) or position equivalent.
