POSITION SUMMARY:
Balchem is seeking a uniquely talented and intellectually curious Senior Scientist to join our Faribault, Minnesota based R&D team. As a key contributor, you-ll lead and support innovation in the development of microencapsulated, agglomerated, and granulated products across a broad spectrum of application spaces-including meats, bakery, snacks, bars, beverages, supplements, nutraceuticals, and animal nutrition. You-ll work at the interface of materials science and process development, translating technical insights into scalable solutions that meet real-world market needs.
This role demands both project management and hands-on execution. You-ll manage projects from concept through commercialization, driving them through Balchem-s formal stage gate process and engaging leadership to ensure alignment and success. Your ability to internally market ideas, build cross-functional consensus, and lead with scientific credibility will be essential.
You-ll collaborate across manufacturing, supply chain, quality, sales, analytical labs, and other R&D teams, generating data at lab, pilot, and commercial scales. The working environment spans office, laboratory, pilot plant, and manufacturing settings, and includes business travel to support plant trials and cross-site initiatives.
Technically, you-ll work with a diverse set of advanced processing technologies including spray drying, fluid bed drying, extrusion, encapsulation, complexation, and reactive chemistry. You-ll conduct lab-scale and bench-top experiments, qualify new raw materials, and contribute to the continuous improvement of full-scale processes and products.You-ll be empowered to take ownership, explore new ideas, and make a lasting impact in a company that values innovation, agility, and scientific excellence.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
+ Promote safety protocols; model safe behavior and champion Balchem-s safety programs.
+ Lead multiple R&D projects from concept to commercialization using formal stage gate processes.
+ Design and execute experiments; analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings effectively.
+ Manage cross-functional teams to deliver projects on time and within scope.
+ Drive innovation by contributing new product ideas and technical solutions and developing prototype examples.
+ Support product development in formulation, application, process design, and specification creation.
+ Collaborate with Sales, Marketing, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and other R&D teams to support launches and resolve product/process issues.
+ Conduct and report on pilot-scale trials; operate pilot plant equipment.
+ Support scale-up to commercial production, including equipment and process adjustments.
+ Troubleshoot manufacturing issues related to materials, equipment, or processing.
+ Maintain thorough documentation to support IP filings and future reference.
+ Prepare presentations and reports for internal stakeholders and leadership.
+ Ensure compliance with GMP and regulatory standards (e.g., FDA).
+ Travel up to 10-20% as needed.
+ Perform additional duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
+ BS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Food Science, or related field required with 4-7 years industry experience or advanced degree with 3-5 years of industry experience.
+ Knowledge of food and dietary supplement GMPs preferred.
+ Proven project management experience in fast-paced environments.
+ Strong communication, influencing, and problem-solving skills.
+ Self-motivated; able to work independently and manage multiple projects.
+ Applies scientific principles to novel situations.
+ Collaborative and solution-oriented mindset.
+ Proficient in Microsoft Office; quick to learn new software tools.
