We are seeking a PRN **_Genetic Counselor_** who will provide direct patient care at least one day per week, seeing patients either in person/in office, or via telemedicine seated at an office at the hospital. Direct patent care includes genetic counseling, patient education, and other services, such as eliciting/updating and assessing personal and family histories, discussing risk assessment, recurrence risk, genetic concepts, and natural history of disease, discussing/coordinating genetic testing and potential results of testing, and performing psychosocial assessment and providing support services. In addition to direct patient care, the genetic counselor will be allotted time before and after seeing patients, for activities such a review of medical records, researching genetic conditions and variant information in published literature and curated databases pertinent to an individual case/patient, coordinating genetic testing, and engaging in discussion and coordination of care with other members of the patient care team.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
+ Provides genetic counseling to patients referred for a wide variety of indications including maternal age, abnormal screening results, abnormal ultrasound findings, family history concerns, pregnancy loss, teratogenic exposures and infertility.
+ Case preparation for the counseling session may include review of previous pertinent testing results, research regarding the condition of concern and arranging for appropriate testing.
+ Coordinates testing, which may include chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis, ultrasound and carrier screening.
+ A qualified candidate should have good case management skills. Communication with maternal-fetal medicine physicians, other medical specialists, referring obstetric providers, and various laboratories is required.
+ Provide follow-up by contacting the patient and referring providers with test results, documentation of the counseling session and results of testing, and assisting with arrangements for additional consultations or testing. Cases are presented in weekly conferences for management and student education.
+ Critical thinking and an independent work ethos can be rewarded with considerable autonomy in this work setting.
+ In addition to responsibilities related to direct patient care, the genetic counselors have opportunities for participation in education via the provision of lectures to various student groups, other medical providers, and lay groups. Additional teaching responsibilities include supervision of genetic counseling graduate students, fellows/residents in maternal-fetal medicine and medical genetics, and medical students and gynecology/obstetrics residents on elective rotations.
+ Collaboration in clinical research is encouraged. Opportunities exist for interaction with 25 additional counselors in other departments at this large, academic medical center.
Minimum Qualifications
+ Master's Degree from a graduate program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling. Must seek (and maintain) certification as a genetic counselor from the ABGC within one year of hire date
+ Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Must be licensed by the Maryland Board of Physicians.
+ One-year genetic counseling experience.

Starting Salary Range: $31.05 - $54.47 HRLY ($41,600 targeted Commensurate w/exp.)
