    We have an exciting opportunity for a Health Physics Technician supporting our Health Physics Team at our Torrey Pines Campus in San Diego, CA.

    Under general direction, this position is responsible for the evaluation, implementation, and control of the company's radioactive waste programs and procedures. Participates in recommending and implementing procedures for inspections, emergency response, waste handling, and waste disposal. Prepares necessary documents, permits, records, and reports to ensure a variety of regulatory and industry standards are maintained. Maintains awareness of federal, state, local, and industry radioactive waste regulations. Assignments are moderately complex in nature where judgment is required in resolving problems and making routine recommendations.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    + Collects and evaluates a variety of radiological and/or environmental samples from employees, air, land, and equipment.

    + Performs duties related to handling of radioactive waste and maintenance of radioactive waste collection areas.

    + Works closely with external services provider to coordinate proper packaging, pick-up, and disposal of radioactive waste.

    + Maintains and updates a variety of electronic and/or hard copy records and files to ensure maintenance of industry standards and regulatory compliance.

    + Maintains a working knowledge of radiological and/or environmental health standards, practices, and equipment.

    + Maintains the strict confidentiality of sensitive information.

    + Responsible for observing all laws, regulations, and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.

    + Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.

    + Evaluates work sites, collects appropriate samples, and conducts radiological surveys to monitor and/or control personnel radiation exposures, environmental releases, and surface-type contaminants.

    + Other duties as assigned or required.

    Job Qualifications:

    + Typically requires an associate's degree in nuclear technology, environmental health, or related field and nine or more years of progressively complex experience. Additional working experience in radiological safety or environmental health may be substituted in lieu of education.

    + Must have a thorough understanding and a wide application of radiological safety concepts and principles, as well as hazardous waste packaging and manifesting, plus appropriate regulations (i.e. NRC 10CFR20, EPA 40CFR, California CCR Title 17, and DOT radiological and hazardous waste shipment requirements).

    + Completion of HAZWOPER (Hazardous Waste Operations) training is required for certain tasks.

    + Must possess:

    + The ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately in an evolving environment;

    + The ability to organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases and determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of moderately complex problems;

    + Strong communication, documentation, interpersonal skills; and strong computer skills.

    + The ability to work independently and as part of a team is essential as is the ability to work extended hours as required.

    + Respiratory Protection training is highly desirable.
