School Safety Specialist
The School Safety Specialist is responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and orderly environment for students, staff, families, and visitors. This role serves as a visible presence on campus, monitoring activity, enforcing school policies, and responding to safety concerns or emergencies. The Safety Specialist works closely with school leadership and staff to promote a positive school climate while ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Campus Supervision & Security
+ Monitor entrances, hallways, common areas, and outdoor spaces to ensure safety and prevent unauthorized access.
+ Greet, screen, and direct visitors in accordance with school visitor policies.
+ Patrol campus grounds before, during, and after school hours to deter inappropriate or unsafe behavior.
+ Monitor student movement during arrival, dismissal, transitions, and lunch/recess periods.
Safety & Emergency Response
+ Assist in developing, practicing, and implementing emergency preparedness drills (fire, lockdown, evacuation, etc.).
+ Respond to incidents, altercations, or emergencies in a calm and professional manner.
+ Trained in appropriate physical restraint processes
+ Notify school leadership and, when appropriate, law enforcement of potential threats or unsafe conditions.
+ Provide first response support until appropriate medical, security, or emergency personnel arrive.
Relationship Building & Student Support
+ Build positive, respectful relationships with students to promote a safe and supportive school climate.
+ Collaborate with the culture coordinator
+ De-escalate conflicts and help resolve disputes in collaboration with staff and student support teams.
+ Serve as a role model, encouraging respectful behavior and adherence to school rules.
Compliance & Reporting
+ Document incidents, accidents, and safety concerns in accordance with school policies.
+ Maintain accurate records of visitor logs, patrols, and safety checks.
+ Support compliance with DC/State safety codes, reporting requirements, and school procedures.
Qualifications
Required:
+ Associates degree or higher
+ 3-5 years of prior experience in middle or high school security, law enforcement, or a related field.
+ Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage positively with students, staff, and families.
+ Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in high-stress situations.
+ Basic knowledge of safety, emergency response, and conflict resolution strategies.
Preferred:
+ Trained in desescalation and physical restraint
+ Experience working in schools or youth-serving organizations.
+ Training/certification in CPR, First Aid, and crisis intervention.
+ Familiarity with DC/State safety regulations for schools.
