This position is in the Statesville County Bridge Maintenance Unit. Position is manual and equipment operational work involved in the maintenance and replacement of bridges, pipes, and reinforced concrete box culverts. Work includes a wide variety of skills utilized in the functional areas including carpentry, concrete work, machine operation, contract inspection, repair of bridges/culverts/large pipe & headwalls, sandblasting and painting, demolition work, trenching and shoring, lead paint removal and steel fabrication.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Management prefers applicants with the following:
+ Experience in Advanced Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices
+ Demonstrated ability supervising and training others in equipment operations
+ Working experience as the Lead Worker on a Bridge or Maintenance Crew without supervision
+ Experience reading and interpreting plans, calculating quantities, and placing orders, plan reading and layout, directing drilling and cutting of holes, or directing erection of steel beams and bridge
+ Experience in trenching and shoring operations
Additional Expectations:
Working safely is a condition of employment. Operate State vehicle, Manual and Automatic, and assigned equipment effectively. Follow instructions to complete assigned tasks without supervision. Use of tools associated with related Bridge maintenance and/or construction activities. The ability to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/ or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/ or in excess of 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. This job will require work to be performed while suspended at moderate heights, confined areas, over water, in water, in extreme heat and cold, and during inclement weather. Safety toe footwear meeting ASTM F2413-05 is needed. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Class A CDL with N endorsements required.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
