    Overview

     

    We are seeking a visionary and strategic **Principal Group Engineering Manager** to lead the People Analytics & Experiences (PAX) engineering organization, driving innovation at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI), data, and employee experience. This role is pivotal in shaping Microsoft’s next-generation employee experience platform, enabling AI-powered insights and personalized services across Human Resources (HR), Information Technology (IT), and enterprise domains. You will define the technical strategy, lead multiple engineering teams, and deliver scalable, secure, and extensible solutions that power Microsoft’s Copilot ecosystem and beyond.

     

    What we do

     

    The PAX team builds intelligent agents, platforms and services that transform how leaders and managers interact with organizational data, leveraging AI and data to deliver personalized, accurate and rich analysis over people data. Our solutions integrate deeply with Microsoft Copilot and powers multiple first party Agents to answer day to day questions for managers, improve decision-making, and enhance productivity for leaders and their delegates worldwide. The applications extend broadly across structural planning of organizations, AI adoption and workforce transformation, staffing, geo-distribution and remote workforce planning, performance and employee development. We’re bringing a personalized AI assistant and partner to every leader!

     

    Our Team

     

    We are a geo-distributed team of engineers in Redmond WA and India, with deep development partnerships with the Microsoft Substrate, Microsoft Organizational Data Ingestion System team, Microsoft AI team and Bizchat team. We partner closely with a talented and senior set of Product Managers, Technical Program Managers, designers, and researchers. We’re a new and emerging product. Both the competition and technology are evolving rapidly, and we’re looking for individuals that current on AI technologies, thrive in ambiguity, learns quickly, curious, and capable of solving problems across multiple code stacks.

    Responsibilities

    + Lead and grow a high-performing engineering team focused on extensibility for employee self-service scenarios.

    + Define and execute the technical roadmap aligned with organizational goals and cross-functional priorities.

    + You will coordinate and partner across product teams, develop and support key extensibility features in Microsoft Artificial Intelligence (AI) products – Microsoft AI and Bizchat. You will collaborate with internal and customer Human Resources Business Intelligence (HRBI), data operations and compliance stakeholders to understand business needs and translate them into technical solutions.

    + Leverage inference from organizational signals—such as skills data, roles, and collaboration patterns—to surface richer insights and deliver more relevant, personalized recommendations that maximize team effectiveness.

    + Build personalization features that leverage organizational context and user preferences to deliver highly relevant, actionable recommendations.

    + Improve the accuracy and relevance of responses by integrating advanced AI models with rich enterprise data, ensuring employees receive context-aware, trustworthy insights.

    + Innovate on adaptive experiences that learn from user behavior and feedback, continuously refining the agent to provide more meaningful and personalized team insights.

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications:

    + Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

    + OR equivalent experience.

    + 8+ years of experience in leading geo-distributed engineering teams.

    Other Requirements:

    Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

     

    + **Microsoft Cloud Background Check:** This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + 10+ years of experience in leading geo-distributed engineering teams.

    + Deep knowledge of AI, cloud-based architectural patterns and best practices.

    + 10+ years of experience in designing, building, and managing high-scale full-stack systems including authentication, microservices, distributed systems, data and analytics workloads, and AI training and inferencing services.

     

    Software Engineering M6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $163,000 - $296,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $220,800 - $331,200 per year.
