    The Engineering Technician II will serve as the Streetcar/Transit Engineer as an essential part of the Major Projects & Transit Division. Under general supervision, this position will perform specialized support of moderate to advanced difficulty applying technical knowledge in the areas of engineering, contract and grant management, or reporting, and permit processing. This work can include small capital and asset management project management, technical writing, transit policy and related research, map reading, budget monitoring, data management and reporting, plan review, and field inspections. This position will directly report to the MPT Division Manager and hold project management responsibilities, including the development of timelines, schedules, and budgets, and contract management, with a primary purpose of supporting the Streetcar Section and other transit partnerships.

    About the division:

    The Major Projects and Transit Division has ~45 employees and creates large city-shaping projects and provides services that improve and serve our community.

     

    We influence and guide the region’s major projects. As a partner in the planning, design, and delivery of regional projects owned by other agencies, we leverage broad organizational expertise to elevate and advocate for city interests in partnership with and for Portlanders. Navigating and ultimately permitting regional projects through PBOT’s lens of safety, equity, and climate is crucial to ensure that major transportation & transit investments have positive outcomes for people and our communities.

     

    We own, operate, and maintain the Portland Streetcar in partnership with TriMet and Portland Streetcar Inc. The Portland Streetcar is a vital component of life in Portland’s central city and provides safe, equitable, climate-friendly transit service to a broad cross-section of Portlanders. This daily service and commitment to continued Streetcar expansion help shape the central city and surrounding areas, supporting and creating new opportunities for equitable development and zero-emissions mobility.

    What you’ll get to do:

    + Be creative, innovative, and collaborate with team members and partners to achieve the best outcomes for the city.

    + As a project leader, coordinate projects by assigning, directing, and coordinating discrete tasks and processes performed by support or other technical staff; review work products, prepare cost estimates, monitor and maintain records on the financial status and progress of work.

    + Collect and analyze programmatic Streetcar performance data, perform specialized data gathering and research, and make recommendations to MPT or Bureau leadership to support decision-making and improve program effectiveness.

    + Provide administrative and technical support to MPT Division staff by assisting in the procurement and contract management process, managing records, reviewing and preparing project documentation, and conducting meetings.

    + Prepare reports and presentations, including graphics, maps, and technical drawings to describe project or program goals and activities.

    + Develop annual work plans, determine, and prioritize work, assign appropriate resources, and manage the budget of this and other related programs as deemed necessary by the Division Manager.

    + Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders in a dynamic, team-based environment.

    + Sustain a culture of safety, organizational excellence, stewardship, and professionalism.

    + Apply continuous improvement principles in standard daily work and long-range planning.

     

    An Ideal Candidate will have at least 3 years of professional engineering experience specializing in transportation planning, transit system management/operations, or urban or environmental planning.

     

    While this position does not design and build projects directly, a general knowledge of design and engineering principles, as well as construction and project delivery, is preferred.
