    THIS POSITION IS OPEN TO CURRENT AND EXTERNAL REVENUE EQUIPMENT MAINTAINERS

    SELECTED CANDIDATES MUST PASS A CIVIL SERVICE EXAM AND BE FROM THE RESULTING LIST TO GAIN PERMANENT STATUS.

     

    Position Description – AFC Technical Support Group (New Fare Payment Systems Focus)

     

    Electronic Maintenance Division

     

    Under direction, and with great latitude for independent judgment, the incumbent will perform a broad range of professional and technical tasks in support of the design, review, testing, implementation, maintenance, and training related to the New Fare Payment System (NFPS). This role is centered on ensuring the reliability and performance of complex electronic and electromechanical fare collection systems, with a special emphasis on the electrical and electronic interface aspects of NFPS, as well as providing training and support for both NFPS and legacy Automated Fare Collection (AFC) systems.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    + Support the implementation and maintenance of NFPS by providing technical expertise during system design reviews, construction, integration testing, and deployment phases.

    + Design and fabricate specialized diagnostic or test equipment to support NFPS functionality, integration, and troubleshooting.

    + Develop and execute custom test protocols based on NFPS equipment specifications and real-world performance requirements.

    + Conduct fieldwork, inspections, and equipment testing at contractor facilities to ensure compliance with performance and interface standards.

    + Identify and source replacement electronic components, researching equivalent commercial parts when necessary.

    + Analyze system-generated computer reports to identify trends, fault patterns, and preventive maintenance opportunities.

    + Operate computers and diagnostic platforms with light programming responsibilities and the application of automated testing concepts.

    + Participate in data collection, analysis, and preparation of technical reports to inform decision-making and continuous improvement of NFPS performance.

    + Conduct training classes and hands-on instruction for technical personnel on both New Fare Payment Systems and legacy AFC equipment, ensuring knowledge transfer, compliance with maintenance standards, and operational readiness.

    + Develop and maintain training materials, manuals, and instructional guides aligned with current system specifications and field conditions.

    + Support material logistics and control functions including processing, storage, and distribution of repair parts and equipment.

    Working Conditions & Expectations:

    + Work may be performed in both laboratory and field environments, including travel to contractor and vendor locations for testing and inspections.

    + The incumbent will work under minimal supervision and is expected to make technically sound decisions independently while adhering to established safety and quality standards.

    Preferred Expertise:

    + Strong working knowledge of fare collection technology and electronic repair.

    + Familiarity with NFPS systems, smart card/contactless payment interfaces, and backend fare transaction processing.

    + Proficiency in troubleshooting tools and diagnostic equipment.

    + Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering, contractor, and maintenance teams.

    + Experience in technical training development and delivery, with the ability to clearly explain complex systems and procedures to diverse audiences.

    Compensation:

    Revenue Equipment Maintainer II Salary Rates: (Revised 05/16/2025)

    1st Year - $45.7914/ Hourly

     

    2nd Year - $47.2528/ Hourly

     

    3rd Year - $48.7142/ Hourly

    License Requirements

    A motor vehicle driver licenses valid in the State of New York with no restrictions which

     

    would preclude performing Revenue Equipment Maintenance work. This license must

     

    be maintained for the duration of employment.

    Education and Experience:

    1. Four years of full-time satisfactory experience at the journey woman/man (i.e., a

     

    fully-trained knowledgeable, experienced, proficient and competent technician)

     

    level in maintaining, testing, troubleshooting, calibrating and repairing equipment

     

    incorporating microprocessors and related electronic equipment; or

     

    2. Three years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "1" above, plus an

     

    associate degree from an accredited college in electronics, electronic technology,

     

    electrical technology, electromechanical technology, or computer technology, or a

    closely related field; or

    3. Two years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "1" above, plus a

     

    baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in electrical engineering,

     

    electronics, electrical technology, electromechanical technology, computer

    technology or closely related field; or

    4. A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience which is equivalent to

     

    "1", "2", or "3" above. College education may be substituted for experience on the

    basis of 30 semester credits, including 12 credits in the specialized fields noted

    above, for 6 months experience. However, all candidates must have at least 2 years

     

    of experience as described in "1" above.
