A Day in the Life
Medtronic’s Risk Management function is committed to protecting Medtronic plc from significant losses that could impact our ability to serve customers, employees, shareholders, and the public. Through a formal approach to self-insurance and robust practices in loss prevention and control, Medtronic maintains a structured program to optimally manage risk.
About the Role
This newly created leadership role is responsible for establishing the strategic direction, governance, and execution of Medtronic Diabetes’ global insurance and enterprise risk management (ERM) programs. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, this leader serves as a trusted advisor to senior leadership and the board, ensuring that risk exposures are proactively identified, assessed and managed across all business units and geographies, aligned with corporate objectives and regulatory requirements. This role requires advanced expertise in insurance, contracts, and risk management policies, and involves close collaboration with internal stakeholders, external authorities, and customers.
This position is an exciting opportunity to work with Medtronic's Diabetes business. Medtronic has announced its intention to separate the Diabetes division to promote future growth and innovation within the business and reallocate investments and resources across Medtronic, subject to applicable information and consultation requirements. This separation provides our team with a bold opportunity to unleash our potential, enabling us to operate with greater speed and agility. As a separate entity, we anticipate leveraging increased investments to drive meaningful innovation and enhance our impact on patient care.
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.
Strategic Leadership & Governance
+ Lead the development and execution of the global risk and insurance strategy, ensuring alignment with corporate goals, board directives, and regulatory requirements.
+ Advise the CFO, executive leadership, and board on emerging risks, mitigation strategies, and risk appetite.
+ Lead the development of risk governance structures, policies, and reporting frameworks.
+ Develop and execute comprehensive risk management strategies that support both global and Diabetes OU business objectives and growth initiatives.
Global Insurance Program & Financial Protection
+ Design and manage global insurance programs, including property, casualty, general liability, product liability, cyber, and directors & officers (D&O) coverage.
+ Lead the collection and preparation of submission data for global insurance policies, including casualty, property, and other corporate programs.
+ Analyze insurance trends and recommend coverage adjustments.
+ Lead strategic negotiations with brokers and underwriters to optimize coverage and cost efficiency.
+ Oversee global claims management, ensuring timely resolution and alignment with legal, finance, and operations teams.
+ Manage insurance programs to minimize asset loss and develop business cases comparing mitigation costs versus potential consequences.
+ Oversee maintenance of electronic policy records, SharePoint Insurance site, and administration of insurance certificates and Auto ID card requests.
Enterprise Risk Management & Risk Assessment
+ Design and implement a robust ERM framework that integrates strategic, operational, financial, and compliance risks.
+ Lead enterprise-wide risk assessments, scenario planning, and reporting, including 10-K filings and other regulatory disclosures.
+ Oversee risk assessments, identify vulnerabilities, and implement strategies to prevent, reduce, or transfer risks.
+ Present risk dashboards and insights to the executive team and board committees.
Compliance & Governance
+ Ensure compliance with international, federal, state, and local risk and insurance regulations, industry standards, and legal requirements.
+ Create, implement, and manage policies and programs for risk management, insurance, and claims reporting.
Cross-Functional Strategic Initiatives & Stakeholder Collaboration
+ Lead enterprise-wide initiatives, including business continuity planning, crisis management, ESG risk integration, and geopolitical risk analysis.
+ Champion a risk-aware culture through training, communication, and leadership engagement.
+ Establish and maintain strong partnerships with internal teams (legal, finance, operations, leadership), brokers, insurers, and third-party vendors to integrate risk management across the business.
+ Collaborate with internal audit, legal, compliance, and finance teams to ensure integrated risk oversight.
Monitoring, Reporting & Continuous Improvement
+ Monitor processes for effectiveness, provide timely and accurate reports and risk analysis to senior leaders, and support ongoing improvement.
+ Lead initiatives to enhance loss prevention, loss control, and risk transfer processes.
M&A Integration
+ Direct risk management due diligence and integration for mergers and acquisitions within the Diabetes OU.
People Planning, Team Leadership & Resource Strategy
+ Evaluate and propose current and future Global Risk Management team structure in a scalable manner while balancing investment needs and business priorities.
+ Mentor and develop risk management staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment.
+ Align talent planning and resource strategy with long-term business goals.
MUST HAVE: MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
+ Bachelor’s degree with 15 + years’ relevant experience in risk management, insurance, or related field and 10+ years of managerial experience
+ Or, an advanced degree with 13+ years’ relevant experience in risk management, insurance, or related field and 10+ years of managerial experience
NICE TO HAVE:
+ Master’s degree or professional certifications (e.g., AINS, ARM, CRM, RIMS-CRMP).
+ Proficiency with enterprise risk software, analytics platforms, and data visualization tools.
+ Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence senior stakeholders.
+ Strong analytical, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$199,200.00 - $298,800.00
This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).
This position is eligible for an annual long-term incentive plan.
The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
