WPIX has an opening for an Assistant News Director. You will manage day-to-day newsroom operations, with an emphasis on growing our CTV platform. We want to find someone who appreciates the role research plays in best serving our digital and TV viewers. The successful candidate will build strong relationships in the newsroom and across departments, be a strong communicator, and lead with empathy.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities :
+ Strategy:
+ Execute the editorial vision and direction set by the News Director.
+ Ensure key content pillars are represented in every newscast across all platforms.
+ Objectively review rundowns and daily content plans to ensure content matches the brand.
+ Be willing to steer away from content that deviates away from the newsroom strategy.
+ Actively participate in market research planning and execution.
Leadership:
Provide regular coaching and feedback to develop team members. Model integrity, ethical behavior and decision making. Demonstrate adaptability and flexibility required in a rapidly changing news environment.
Newsroom Operations:
Oversee daily news coverage, including leading and participating in daily editorial meetings and rundown reviews. Lead teams to produce engaging, research-driven newscasts that reflect the newsroom strategy and content pillars, Oversee scheduling for the department and provide direct scheduling for on-air talent. Assist in recruiting and hiring newsroom team members. Scheduling flexibility to cover various dayparts depending on staffing or breaking news circumstances. Assist with newsroom training initiatives including standards & practices.
CTV & Digital:
Work with newsroom producers and on-air team members to generate CTV show ideas. Lead and assist with training on OBS systems for newsroom personnel. Maintain a weekly programming grid. Interest in/willingness to learn and understand successful IT and engineering setups for live streaming. Liaise with Executive Producer, Digital to execute strategy across PIX11.com and social channels.
Requirements & Skills:
+ Passion for local news
+ Knowledge of journalistic ethics, libel, and privacy laws
+ Innovative, user-focused, and full of creativity and initiative
+ Strong editorial judgment
+ Great people skills
+ Minimum 10 years of newsroom management experience in a top-50 market.
+ Strong written and verbal communication skills
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
The Assistant News Director must be able to stand, sit, reach, conduct telephone conversations, use electronic mail, write letters and memos, conduct face-to-face discussions with individuals or groups, make decisions without supervision, make decisions that impact the results of co-workers, and work indoors in environmentally controlled conditions. Must be able to lift, set up and operate equipment or items weighing up to 25 pounds.
Salary Range: starting at $220,000
