    The Husky Union Building** **has an outstanding opportunity for a Program Manager (Deaf and Disability Cultural Center) to join their team.

     

    About this Opportunity

     

    Reporting to the Associate Director for Student Activities, the Program Manager for the Deaf and Disability Cultural Center (D Center) is responsible for the day-to-day operations and overall direction of the Center to support students who are d/Deaf, Disabled, or a community ally in maximizing their Husky Experience. The Program Manager will create an affirming and supportive environment through maintaining the Center’s amenities, hosting community programming, and creating educational and awareness initiatives. The Program Manager will build relationships and connections with d/Deaf and Disabled community members, student organizations, and campus departments to advance the mission, vision, and values of the D Center and Husky Union Building.

    Key Responsibilities

    Administration | (40%)

    + Oversee all operations, programs, and services within the D Center.

    + Support department strategic initiatives, programs, and services to meet the needs of students served by the D Center.

    + Hire, supervise, train, schedule, evaluate, and direct the work of 3 student employees to operate the Center, conduct outreach efforts, and host events.

    + Prepare, monitor, and manage annual operating and programming budgets.

    + Continually assess the effectiveness and outcomes of the D Center’s programs, initiatives, and operations. Recommend and implement changes to meet the emerging needs of students.

    + Collect data and develop and publicize reports.

    + Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, local, and university policies, rules, and regulations in the operation of the Center and its programs.

    + Maintain records in accordance with University Policies and Procedures.

    + Participate in department and unit staff meetings, committees, and other working groups.

    + Perform other duties as assigned.

    Programming | (40%)

    + Create, plan, execute, evaluate, and assess programs, activations, and services focused on d/Deaf and Disability causes, communities, and culture.

    + Initiate, coordinate, support, and/or sponsor collaborative programs with other University departments, student government entities, and/or Registered Student Organizations (RSOs).

    + Support the development of trainings, tools, references, guides, modules, courses, and other educational materials related to d/Deaf and Disability awareness, accessibility, and universal access design.

    Outreach | (20%)

    + Cultivate and sustain collaborative partnerships with University departments (e.g. Disability Resources for Students, Disability Services Office, Civil Rights Compliance Office – ADA Coordinator) and student government entities (ASUW Students with Disabilities Commission, GPSS Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion).

    + Oversee the curation and distribution of newsletters, advertisements, flyers, posters, brochures, stickers, and other promotional materials to enhance awareness of the D Center and its operations and programs.

    + Participate on University committees and other working groups promoting awareness of d/Deaf, Disability, and other related causes.

    + From time-to-time, advise the department, student government entities, and Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) on d/Deaf and Disability causes.

     

    Supervision

     

    This position reports to and works under the general supervision of the Associate Director for Student Activities.

     

    This position provides primary supervision to 3 student employees.

    Minimum Qualifications

    + Bachelor’s degree in Disability Studies, Psychology, or related subject.

    + 2 years’ experience in program management or support roles serving d/Deaf and Disabled individuals or communities.

     

    Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    Additional Qualifications

    + Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to establish and maintain positive working relationships and ensure collaboration and cooperation among units within the HUB and external departments.

    + Ability to use independent judgement and problem-solving skills.

    + Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to effectively communicate with diverse individuals.

    + Strong commitment to advancing a diverse, equitable, and inclusive campus community.

    Desired Qualifications

    + Assistive Technology Professional (ATP), Accessibility Practices Certificate (APC), Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI), or other related certificates.

    + Fluency in American Sign Language.

    + Knowledge and understanding of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and other federal and state laws relating to d/Deaf and Disability access and rights.

    + Experience as a professional staff member in Higher Education.

    + Experience supervising student employees.

    + Familiarity with University of Washington policy, procedure, and systems.

     

    Working Conditions

     

    Occasional weekend and evening work may be required to host and monitor programming events. Flexible schedule available including hybrid work opportunities up to 16 hours (2 days) remote work per week with supervisor approval. Work performed in a private office space within the D Center suite.

    About the Team

    D Center

     

    The d/Deaf and Disability Cultural Center (“D Center”) is a student-centered community space and program serving UW students who identify as d/Deaf, Disabled, chronically ill, and neurodiverse, and their allies. The D Center is committed to fostering a safe and inclusive space for people of all abilities to learn, socialize, and celebrate themselves in community with each other. In addition to operating the community space, the D Center lends adaptive and accessible equipment and resources; hosts and sponsors events; and supports advocacy, awareness, and educational activities across campus.

     

    Student Activities Office

     

    The D Center Program Manager reports to the Associate Director for Student Activities. The Student Activities Office is dedicated to helping students excel and grow professionally and personally through on campus extracurricular involvement and leadership development. Primarily responsible for supporting and advising the activities of Registered Student Organizations (RSOs), the Associated Students of the University of Washington (ASUW), and the Graduate and Professional Student Senate (GPSS), the Student Activities Office also plans, hosts, sponsors, and coordinates educational trainings for student leaders and entertaining programs for the student body.

     

    Husky Union Building

     

    The D Center and Student Activities Office are units within the Husky Union Building (HUB), a Division of Student Life department.

     

    The HUB serves as the center of the UW community and complements the student experience through an extensive variety of cultural, educational, social, and recreational programs. These programs provide the opportunity to balance course work and free time in the Husky Experience.

     

    The HUB is a student-centered organization that values participatory decision-making. Through volunteerism, its boards, committees, and student employment, the HUB offers first-hand experience in citizenship and educates students in leadership, social responsibility, and values. In all its processes, the HUB encourages self-directed activity, giving maximum opportunity for self-realization and for growth in individual social competency and group effectiveness.

    Compensation, Benefits and Position Details

    $61,368.00 annual
